915 case replacement questions
 

I had my 915 rebuilt a few years ago and parked it on the shelf until my project was ready for it. This past weekend I uncovered it to measure hub flanges and discovered some ugly cracks. When I bought it years ago I was told it was a euro box as it has the oil cooler. Serial number and part number pictures below. If this is a euro case is it any different than a regular 915 case? Is there a year of case I should try and find as the best replacement? Thank you for your assistance.

The castings are the same, so replacing the case is not that difficult. The transmission differences are in the type # and gearing, and possibly the cooler.
Strange that the case is cracked like that, especially if it was just sitting on a shelf. Are you sure it was not dropped or struck during storage? The cracks should have been visible during the rebuild process, and the rebuild aborted at the time.

My fear is the bearing were not pressed in correctly. Didn't really inspect it that closely after I picked it up. I do know it hasn't been dropped or hit in anyway.

this crack would be after major impact..can you take more pictures all aorund the trany??

as mentioned above, it can be interchanged to us model case but it will require a pro to do all the measurements for you..

No matter what replacement case you get, the ring and pinion will need to be reset. You can’t jist drop everything with the current shims.

Somebody knocked it off the shelf and don’t tell you.

Can't blame the kids on this one unfortunately.
Going to go back to the builder and have a chat about the new axels and LSD installation.
All custom gears and a great 8:31 R/P. A bit of a heart breaker!

Those are NOT cracks.

That is flash from the casting process. Inspect it closely, and you'll see that it's excess material above the surface.
Here's an empty 84 Euro case with the same issue, in the same place. They're not cracks.

This is casting flash on my case, they are not cracks. And notice how the lines on both cases match exactly.
But if you're in doubt, you can clean the area and do a dye penetrant test.
