Thanks for all the great info everyone.

To confirm, the ignition point gap on this car 1973.5 with CIS should be .016 in?

The gap is just a starting point, and I believe it is .014, .35mm. As stated before, the important thing is setting the dwell.
Here is a thread of mine on distributors. It also contains links to other good threads concerning distributors. The original distributor can be replaced with no issues with later '74-'77 distributors. I used one from a '77 for a few years. I currently use the original 0 231 169 008 (73.5 T w CIS) specific distributor after re conditioning it. https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/692119-distributor-maintenance.html
Timing will need to be reset after setting dwell.

Thanks Ed,

I got a hold of a "vintage" dwell meter from the local classifieds to be sure of the dwell angle.
Was wanting to confirm the point gap as I have seen .014 and .016 on different manuals.

You guys get dwell angle with the engine running correct?
One wire to a ground on the fan and the other to the connection from the points at the distributor.
Correct?

Sounds about right for the initial setting. Dwell meter is the final setting.

Exactly.

Got a dwell meter.
Set the point gap to .014 and the dwell meter is reading 36degrees.
Manual states it should be 38 +or- 3.
Better to be above or below the 38 degrees? Any difference there?

Dwell increases as the rubbing block wears. Too low is a better starting point.
