too much oil
I had stored my 83 SC for about 5 months. I changed the oil just before storage, Upon start-up it smoked like crazy. A short run around the block and back into the garage to check everything visually. All looked fine so I started it up a second time and it seemed pretty normal. I took it for a good drive today 10-15 miles and did notice a small amount of blue smoke initially but none on my return. A read of the dipstick while hot showed I may have overfilled by 1/2 of quart. No blue smoke noticed at that point. Will I do any harm if I DO NOT drain off?

No particular problem.
You can anyway drain som oil using a big syringe connected to a tube from the oil tank or have your car run for a long spirited drive.

drain the engine case only ,that will be 3 liters or quarts..then run warm and fill it up with that oil .Leave about 5cm before the top mark on dipstick..If that drain plug seal is not too crushed reuse it but new one is always better..

Depending on where you live 10-15 miles may only get the engine warm. I'd leave it, you'll only make a mess trying to drain 1/2 quart. A little smoke on start-up is normal especially after sitting for months.

horizontal cylinders....a tiny bit of oil seeps past the rings when the engine cools and that's the blue smoke you normally see on startups after the cars sits and the engines cools. Nothing to worry about...totally normal.

Mine did this too. I had also just changed the oil then let it sit. The oil seeps by the rings and leaks out into the exhaust past an open valve or two or three. It will smoke like crazy until it burns off. You just have to drive it more.

Thanks all. so it will get a good workout. Everything seems fine now. Tomorrow I will take it over to Hilton Head Concours. About an hour each way!

Definitely don't run it overfilled though. You'll be sucking oil into the breather/intake. I'd follow proporsche's advice.

It's almost two quarts between the fill and full line on the dip stick. I'd empty the sump or use a turkey baster or a fluid pump to remove some oil. Add enough back in to get half way between those two lines when hot. No need to try to keep it near the top line.

Next time you store your car, refill with only 5 qts. and avoid all the smoke when you start it up. You'll even have plenty of oil pressure at that level, guaranteed!

install a fumoto valve at the next change.
I used to overfill because my engine was never warm enough during oil changes. Now with the valve, i can just take out as needed without a mess. |
