Mounting holes for hood emblem

my 87 911 was painted and the painters inadvertently filled in the mounting holes for the hood emblem. They were filled with filler and painted over. Is there a way to locate them using measurement or some trick to find them under the paint? I could not fine an exact location description in the factory service manual, google, or searching this forum. Thanks.

Can you poke through from the backside? If there is filler and fresh paint involved, maybe use a small hand drill to be safe.

Or, consider a crest decal instead?

Open the hood there's two holes punched in the hood frame for speed nut access, you should be able to locate from backside. Get some painters tape apply to topside if paint is cured and use a sharp drill from backside.

The car was painted about a year ago so the paint has fully cured. I have looked carefully for some dimpling on the underside of the hood but there is nothing. If I can get close to where the emblem should be, I think I can find the holes using a magnet, but I need an approximate location.

I would appreciate it if one of you would measure from the front of the hood to the bottom of your emblem. This will enable me to place the location within an inch. I will then tape a piece of clear plastic over that site, attach a large magnet I use to pick up screws to the underside of the hood and sprinkle some iron filings on the plastic. Theoretically, the metal hood should block the magnetic field, except through the holes filled with non-magnetic filler, and the filings should congregate over the holes.

Let us know if your magnetic trick works... I have the same issue on my 71.

Thanks,

Karl

I skipped over your response - didn't see it at all - and typed up a method to solve the dilemma using the same method - although I suggested that saran wrap be used rather than "plastic."

Steel will become magnetic and hold the filings in place, the plastic filler holes won’t.

Holes are 5 inches from edge of hood

kfosburg: I will post pictures.

MBATarga: Technically, Saran Wrap is plastic. My description was unclear but that is what I planned to use.

timmy2: I was pretty sure this would work but it's been a long time since I studied magnetism :-)

Dpmulvan: Thanks!
