Child booster seat

Anyone have any information on what make/model booster seat can be used in an 84 Carrera? The rear buckets are so small, their current boosters are no where close to fitting. I have a 4 and a 7 year old daughter and they're bugging me to go out in the car. I live in NJ, so they both need to be in boosters until they're 8. Thanks

My 7 year old rides in the back without a booster. I stick my 4 year old in a high back booster on the front seat (no air bag). No "spirited" corners with them.

Use the search feature. I did some research in the past and found a thread that had a couple seats listed that would fit.

In NJ children (by law) have to be in the back seat in a car seat or at a certain age/weight/height a booster seat. I'm OK with both of my kids not being in either, but I don't want to get caught. I doubt a cop would let me go without having proper seating for a child. I'd imagine getting the car impounded.

I've thought the same thing. There's lots of side bulster back there. Lap belts are questionable though.

You need something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006ZISVSO/ref=mp_s_a_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501936950&sr=8-6&keywords=booster

Or try an inflatable one. I use these for travel:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AQYZCXK/ref=mp_s_a_1_13_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501936950&sr=8-13&keywords=booster

Bottom line is to get the seat belt straps over shoulders and hips (pelvic bone).

Back in the day (1980s), Porsche actually carried a child seat for the 911. However, it was priced at a ridiculous price that gave me the impression that they really didn't want to sell any. Has anyone actually ever seen or owned one?

My 6 year old twins ride back there for local drives to ice cream etc - they fit perfectly. For me the seats are fine size wise but three point belts (lack of) are the issue for me. I do slow local roads only. As far as police, they can give me the ticket. After 3 kids and latching car seats in and out of cars for 10 years I am done.

We did a 600 mile trip in my 86 Turbo earlier this summer with my wife, my 7 year old and my 4 year old.

I modified 2 of those backless booster seats. I merely pulled back the fabric on the bottom and trimmed the corners on the back / bottom of the seats. They fit the back seats perfectly and unless you pull back the fabric, you can't tell they have been modified. This didn't affect the structure of the booster.

I've seen pictures of those here on the forum. Someone even proudly showed one he had bought on eBay and was using 30 years later. They look absolutely deadly to me - they're a hard bar that goes across the kid's stomach, and no restraints for the upper body. For my kids in the back, it's a modern car seat (Britax ones fit) or nothing. They're not yet booster seat age though, and in reality I've only had my son back there once.

The child seat I am using for my 3 year old is getting small. He’s not large enough to sit back there with just the cushion part of a booster so I’m on the hunt for a booster seat that’ll fit.

This is what I have been using, but my son is a bit tall for it now.

All the posts that reference models which fit are all no longer available.

Has anyone bought one in the last few years that fit well?

It's been a few years but Im pretty sure this is the one I used to use. 99% perfect fit, not 100% but pretty close.

One problem you may run into, I think the laws that allow just a booster seat (without a 5-point harness) assume that you have a shoulder belt securing the kid, not just a lap belt.

Does your 1984 have shoulder belts in back, or are you looking for a larger seat than you have now, but with the 5-point harness?

Mark

3pt rear belts wear the first mid I did to my 930 for this very reason. A booster does nothing with 3 point belts.

I use this seat in the back for my 3-year-old.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B006PB2B6O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
"Forward-facing toddler from 22 - 40 lbs. (height: 28 - 40 inches)."
She's 38 inches, so I'm not sure what I'll do next summer.

I had to remove the little kickstand on the back of it, remove the seat bottom cushion that is part of the car, and remove the seatbelt and replace it with washers and a hook-ended strap. I'll do a quick paintbrush image for you in a bit.
The new strap runs back behind everything and cinches real tight, so the seat won't move.

I can take a photo of the installed system. I can't really photograph the bolt/washer rig, as it is behind the seat and a pain to put in and take back out again.

So I do have 3 point belts in my 84. It has the threaded holes for the upper part of the 3 point harness.

My 6 year old just uses a booster cushion with 3 point harness but my younger guy (almost 4) is too small. I think he still needs a 5 point harness. The seat I have for him is still OK, but seems a bit short, meaning that it doesn't come up higher than his head.

My three year old goes in my car in a booster seat that I got at Target - I think it was around 50 dollars. He's pretty big for his age. It basically just takes the seatbelt and routes it appropriately so it fits over his smaller body correctly. I use it in the front because the back only has lap belts, and I'd rather have him in the front and correctly buckled vs. the back in lap belts.

To be fair, I only take him out for early morning drives on big roads without a lot of curves. There's always an element of risk in taking a child in a 30+ year old car, but wide, straight highways is different than canyon carving. Florida laws are pretty general - the only stipulation on front/back is that if the car is equipped with airbags he has to go in the back - which, an 86 Carrera is basically a tin can with wheels, so airbags aren't really a thing.

I think if I wanted to be table to take him out in more scenarios I'd get a bigger seat with a harness, and install a metal loop on the rear deck behind the back seats so I could secure it appropriately. Depends on what you want to do!

I need to go measure his height...this might pretty close to what I'm using now. I'm just looking to bridge the gap with something else before he graduates to just the booster cushion with 3 point harness.
