3.2 normal operating temperature range
How high should the temperature gauge read driving at 85 degree?

Cant comment on 85 degrees yet since Ive had the car for about a month... but in about 70 degrees my guage never reaches the first line.

My 87 would run just below the 2nd dash, same with my 88 during even warm/hot days unless stuck in traffic. The general way to remember the temps is the 1st dash is 150, 2nd 200, 3rd 250, and 41th is 300. According to His Highness, Bruce Anderson, 250 is "too damn hot". Mine have never gone above what I call the 9 pm mark or about 225 and that was stuck in traffic with the A/C running during the hot summer. I think this is still too cool for the fan to run on the front cooler but at least the oil is running through it.

Yeah, fan will come on at 245. Mine is usually somewhere between the first mark and 9. Sitting and idling it will get to 245 and kick the fan on. I have since added a bypass switch for the relay to kick the fan on at will.
A couple of things that I did to improve cooling where to 1 fill in the open area under/in front of the cooler so the air has to go through the cooler and can't escape under, 2 Remove the foglight (it didn't really do anything anyway, and 3 seal around the cooler (between the cooler and the body) since the original seal had deteriorated. 1 and 3 are designed to force the available air through the cooler, and 2 is to allow more air in.
