Happy ending. Job done and voltage so far is 14.1 to 14.3 with no drop outs. Thanks for all the great help here. I had the alternator rebuilt with new brushes, regulator and bearings. Cost was $105 and they even did a decent job cleaning the fan. I polished all the electrical connections including the washers and nuts. JWs tip on removing the alternator by dropping on wood worked great. I spent closer to seven hours on it so not bad for a beginning wrench. Great feeling knowing that I did it.

Happy Holidays to all.
