5th/reverse 3rd/4th detent question.....

1984 915

I made the dubious decision to remove both roll pins out of the case to remove this double detent mechanism.

Upon reassembly I ran into a slight issue.

The lowest roll pin went back in fine...It obviously slots into the thin area of the bottom most detent (5th/rev) part # 915.303.130.00

But the top roll pin is where I'm having the issue.

What is the exact way that the roll pin (m3.5x18) engages the sleeve ? (part# 915.303.135.00)

On its side? Which if you just put the spring (915.303.232.00) and the sleeve down the bore into its natural uncompressed resting position you would be inserting the roll pin midway on the side of the sleeve.

OR

must you compress the sleeve and the spring below the roll pin hole..then bang the pin in?...holding the sleeve in place completely below the roll pin sort of on its lip?

(Afterwards you would slide in pin (915.303.271.00) and top detent (3rd/4th) (915.303.131.00)

I tried just putting spring in....then the sleeve and then banging pin in...and it would not go in...got all mangled in the process....

I just have not seen a good quality picture or procedure on how to reinstall the top roll pin and where the sleeve actually rests in relation to it.

Any knowledge would be much appreciated!

Bump with pictures

Where is collar in relation to roll pin?

Example A or B?

Thank you Jon B!

I did use the search function...but I never discovered that exact thread!

So to recap... Example B installed while under compression is the winner.

Thank you again!

This is the sequence.
The collar sits below the upper roll pin...

Factory manual has a great schematic of that.

Jon B,

What do you think of improvising with a long thin screwdriver with electrical tape wrapped around the tip thick enough to engage the collar to push but not slip through.

I notice on pictures of p366 that the shank near the end just above the pushing part is cut away presumably to allow space for the roll pin to be pushed in clear of the tool.

If the shank of the screwdriver I would use is thin enough it could work?

Mike, I don't think tape will stay in place, but you can try.

Find a screwdriver long and narrow enough to fit into the case, but wide enough to not slip through the collar.
You can grind on the screwdriver if necessary, and smooth any sharp edges that might scratch the bore.

Here's a close-up of the collar with the factory tool.
