Question stuck during a valve adjustment...

I was in the midst of doing a valve adjustment with the new kit by snap gap.
clumsy as I am, a shim fell to the bottom of the rocker arm of cylinder # 1.
It seems to be stuck in the hole there...
Any suggestion how to retrieve it will be much appreciated.

Flexible/bendable tool with small magnet on end. Go fishing. Hmmmm, a negative on this new cool innovative valve adjustment tool which I’m seriously considering. I’m clumsy a lot!

Special recovery tool........

Use an extra long stainless self-locking forceps to retrieve the errant piece.

Question stuck during valve adjustment

I believe but not sure, that the shim is stuck in the gap at the lower end of the rocker arm. (the gap used in the BACK METHOD VALVE ADJUSTMENT)
How do I then increase that gap at the bottom by rotating the adjustment screw on top?
Any other ideas from the experts?

David,

Loosen the nut for the rocker and turn the screw CCW just enough to release the errant piece. Keep us posted.

Not sure of the material they are using for the shims, but 300 series stainless steels on not going to stick to a magnet.

I bought one of those cheap flexible cameras you hook up to your cell phone, came in handy a bunch of times. Maybe that and a large pair of tweezers. 300 series stainless is non-magnetic.

Another option is to use an air gun with medium/long tip (just the! ) to dislodge it. You can use a towel to keep it from flying away.

stuck during valve adjustment

Hi Guys,
I am embarrassed to tell you...but I found the shim on the floor under the car...
I thought it dropped below the adjustment screw but obviously I was wrong and you have my apologies and thanks for your input.

It happens, whenever something falls it always seems to take a football bounce falling in the most unexpected place.

For insurance could you put a rag next to the rocker to block the holes from dropping something down in them....?
Glad you found it...now get some sleep because I know you haven't slept the last few nights thinking about it..lol

Question stuck during valve adjustment..

Initially I described a problem during my valve adjusting work dropping a shim into the hole below the adjustment screw or the one besides it with the shining cylinder. Just wondering and looking for an answer
What could happen if I can not retrieve the shim or any other object from the "hole" ?
Will that object travel further inside the engine? just worried ...

stuck during valve adj.

I thought that it was a simple question...let me clarify.
What happens during a valve adjustment, to a shim or a nut that falls into the cavity (hole) at the bottom of the rocker? does it goes anywhere? just wondering...
