First run after 4 year lay up but some Problems ! please help.
1976 2.7 911
So after blowing the air box up, probably due to priming by lifting the AFS beam ! I have now installed a new air box and all the other good stuff e.g. seals, gaskets, injectors, plugs ..... So now starts on the button however, the following needs resolving: Its about 2 degrees C here in UK, car starts first turn of key, stumbles for a second or 2 and then settles at a fast idle ~1100 rpm, I have not run the car for very long 20-30 seconds each time, but done this about 6 times now I would have thought the fast idle would have dropped down to something around 900 rpm by now or will it take longer ? As soon as the engine starts to warm (Clean no smoke until a little warm) lots of blue smoke from exhaust and left side heat exchange (not yet connected to to ducting). Should this be expected after a 4 year layup ? I have regularly sprayed the bores with oil and rotated the crank over these years. Cheers Mark |

CIS warmup phase is on the order of minutes at low ambient temp. 2C is low.

Oil pooling inside the exhaust system is somewhat common. It will smoke a lot, and then probably be fine.

Get it to a stable idle (a minute or two) and then drive for about 30-40 minutes (assuming brakes etc or in good nick). Once fully warm use the loud pedal with gusto.
Hopefully smoke will clear and will run happy.

Can't drive as no interior, glass or drive shafts fitted. Just wanted to check engine before investing in detailing and new SSI system. I can understand how oil can get in to the heat exchangers but not how it gets in to the exhaust pipe.
I'll run it a little longer tomorrow, see if smoke clears. |

Good news, let it run for 40 mins in total, rpm dropped significantly after 3 mins i.e. 1600 rpm down to 950 rpm, adjusted idle screw for 900 rpm idle and set timing 5 degrees ATDC as per gold label on fan housing. after 40 mins the oil in exhaust and heat exchangers burnt off, engine running sweet and clean :-)
However, moving on to the next thing to check was Sportomatic function ! put in gear and no drive, this was working perfectly when I took engine & gearbox out, will open new thread for this. Thanks for the help Mark |

As expected but still amazing how these ancient fuel systems hold up to spec when refreshed after 40 yrs. |
