License Plate Panel Paint

Say that 5 times heh..
Repainted my rear panel because P. O. put a dent in it as well as a deep scratch. Paint and clear went on smooth, no problems.
After I ran the car awhile I noticed the paint starting to bubble (I assumed) from the heat radiated by the muffler. Not too bad at first but now almost the entire panel is bubbled.
Did I miss something? I used quality RM paint as well as clear.

Also painted the quarter panel extensions at the same time, no problems with them.

Timmy2 has a valid question, there's a heat shield that rests in the bumper area to protect the paint from exhaust heat....

There wasn't one when I got the car, was fitted with an aftermarket exhaust. I don't find one on any of the parts diagrams. Part number?

Consider adding one or wrapping the muffler like the dragster guys do. Be advised the wrap retains moisture and can rot out a mild steel muffler.

You could always use a heat resistant paint or dip coat the muffler. Lots of options.

I thought the heat shield was an option? I have never seen one. Anyone have a picture?

Could it be caused by the aftermarket exhaust? My 73 has OE exhaust and no heat issues with rear panel paint. Rob

Painted 15 years ago - Did this just recently bubble? Or bubble slowly over time? Are you sure it's not rust bubbles underneath?

Good question. Or is it possible something has changed with the engine (maybe oil flow) making it run hotter recently?

Hard to tell for sure. Can you take pictures of the backside too? Good news is that panel is easily removed from the car. If you end up having it repaired and painted, it should not be a ton of money.

Removing the panel is no problem as well as repainting (still have left-over paint and clear).
Just wondered if anyone else had a similar problem, if there was a part missing, etc. Looks like I have an incompatibility issue with the old/new paint.

Thanks to those that responded, always appreciated!

There should be insulation on the back of the panel.

I have a 72 & there is no insulation between muffler & license plate panel. The only time I burnt the paint was when I had a burned out muffler and the exhaust was hitting the panel directly. Do you have any pin hole leaks in the muffler or gaskets?

Guy at the paint store said the panel was a replacement, was quickie sprayed with lacquer. Two stage polyurethane was not happy with the underlying lacquer.

The Insulation is nothing more than a thin flat sheet of asbestos type material glued to the back of the panel. You should be able to source some nd cut to size, otherwise you will be repainting soon.

Ordered a sheet of adhesive backed heat barrier made by Thermo-Tec. Rated to 2000 degrees. Should do the trick.
There was a tar like undercoating sprayed to the backside of the panel, doubt if it was reflecting any heat.
