Parking Brake Stuck

My RSR Backdate on a 78SC have left me stranded for the first time. Karma should have been on my side, but alas, I am stuck.

The handle moves up and down, but the e-brake drums seem to be locked. I had to jump on a flight so I left the car at his office and now I am heading over to tackle this. Can't find too much via search so figured that I would start a new thread.

I did not have time to jack up the car so i don't know if it is one side or both, but the gripping power it had when I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on leads me to believe it is both sides.

I drove the car forwards and back 10 feet to free it, but it is still locked up tight.

Any advice is always welcome.

use 2x 17mm open wrench and on both side release the pressure on the hand brake cables..hopefully this will let it go....report after

How can you drive the car if the brakes are locked up tight?

porschenut..it is the handbrake--possible one of the shoes is off..

Loosened the cable nut but my driver side is still frozen with only about 1/4 inch in play. Passenger side is totally normal.

Just to keep everyone on the edge of their seats a bit longer, now that I have the caliper off,I cannot remove the disk due to the seized parking break. Does anyone know the size of these for lack of a better term pushing bolts?

those are regular 13 mm head and 8mm size bolts;-)

I suggest you simply turn the brake shoe adjustment gear a couple of notches to loosen the shoe. If still sticks, tap the drum with a hammer while trying to turn it. It should come loose.

Safe and sound, removed the disk, loosened the adjustment thingie and put it all back together. Thanks Pelican!

Weird thing is, I am not 100% sure what the issue actually was. When I removed the disk, everything appeared to be in good working order. Like someone over tightened the shoe when I wasn’t looking in 30 seconds. I expected to see something wrong when I removed everything but like I said before everything seemed fine just way to expanded.

I saw this before on a 73 car. Due to corrosion and bad adjustment of the handbrake shoes. The clevis gets pulled over center and gets jammed in a extended position. Make sure things are clean and the shoes are adjusted and you won’t see this problem again.

This can happen when you crank the handle up wile the discs are very hot .
They bind up due to heat .
Likewise , on some cars they release as they’re cooling and your car goes rolling down the hill

Mine had a problem like this. I cant recall the specifics but the little wing parts were messed up so i had to weld something and fiddle with it to get it working right again. I ended up taking the wheel off about 6 times because the brake kept locking up everytime i tested it in the driveway. It was a bit of a nightmare I had the patience of a saint that day. I should have just bought new parts but didnt feel like waiting on them

Well guys, this has happened again. I was able to "fix" it again by removing the rotor but once again nothing was obviously wrong. I am going to dig in again today to try to find the actual cause.

I suggest you inspect the actuator arm carefully, comparing it to the working side. Re-attach it, lube it, adjust it so it takes no more than 4 or 5 clicks to fully engage. And carry a jack in the car.

When the parking brake on my 78 SC seized it was because the inner cable was seized in the outer sheath - the inner cable corrodes. I have had to replace both cables in my 26 year ownership. Suggest this is your problem. To check, disconnect cable at drum and pull on handbrake; release handbrake and try to pull inner cable back. If it's tight then a new cable is required.

like 30westrob said its likely the plunger going over center. theres two tabs that the cable leavers out . When you pull the drum off it releases and looks like nothing is wrong. you cant release it by pushing in the cable because there is no nut or anything on the cable side to push it back in.

My SC does that occassionally. In the garage allways. But driving forward, the six inches of spare room I have, has always freed it up.

PS Would you pass a message on to the kids please. "Park that stupid looking bike elsewhere, anywhere, just not next to the 911."
