Unusual (to me) relay question

Quick question on relays.

I had a no-start situation. Determined (via extensive thread searching) I wasn't getting power to the fuel pump. Swapped out the red relay for a black one as a diagnostic. Car started immediately.

Our sponsor did a great job of getting me a replacement ASAP. Unfortunately, I reverted back to a no-start situation. Immediately switched in the old black relay, and started immediately.

Besides the diode in the red relay, is there anything that would cause the black relay to work, but the red not?

One thing that comes to mind is that the new relays, even the Porsche branded ones, are garbage. There is a thread on here somewhere, where a guy bought a Porsche branded one, opened it up, and the half backed components inside looked like they had been soldered together by a six year old (which they probably were).

Do you have another, known good red relay available (maybe form another spot in the fuse/relay board), that you can put in the fuel pump relay socket and see if the pump then works?

I agree with Rawknees Turbo. The new Porsche red round relays are not the same. I had one fail after about six months when used as my 87 oil cooler fan relay.

make sure the relay pins are a tight fit in the socket just to be sure.
