Ignition lock issue - '79 911 SC
Hi,
I'm new to Porsche ownership, having acquired a '79 911 SC RHD road/track car. Mechanically the car is great. Body & interior need a little tidying up. Nothing major. I'm having intermittent issues with the ignition lock. The key turns in the lock ok, but sometimes the key doesn't turn all the way over to start the car. If I pull the key out slightly, or push it in and jiggle it around, it will eventually completely turn and start the car. I've tried flooding the lock with WD40 to clean it out. Made sure the bolts are screwed tight so there's no play, but to no avail. Is this a lock or switch issue? Also noticed that the bolt that secures the ignition lock to the steering column is missing. I don't think this is the issue as the key will unlock the steering lock? But I could be wrong. As for the bolt on the steering column, does anyone know the part number or specs so I can source it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, |

The bolt under the switch cover is 6mmx15 or so

My key does the same thing. I think it is a precursor to it being at the end of it's life.

I occasionally have this problem, and this is what I do: flip the key and try again, make sure the steering wheel is not fighting the lock (this can happen when the steering wheel is locked with the wheels in a turning position at a large angle), pull the key out then knock on the keyhole with my knuckles and try the key again. This last one always works (though I may have to do it two times).

HI,
Thanks all for the input. Update on this post. Pulled the whole lock & switch mechanism out and removed the switch. With the switch removed, the lock still jams randomly preventing the last turn which starts the car. Have taken the unit to a local auto locksmith. Hoping its repairable so I don't have to folk out the high cost of a new one. |

Take the pin out that secures the tumbler, pull out the tumbler, pop the disc off the bottom and remove the detent pin and spring. The pin hangs up on the ramp it's supposed to slide on. You can live without the reverse lockout.

As per JW.
Had that problem for a few years... The "barrel" was loose and the Lock Out mechanism came on randomly. Punch the two rivet and never had it since. Check: Ignition switch springing problem
