parts cleaners

time to rebuild the 930 engine.
most of the big parts have been cleaned and machined.
but I am sick and tired of soaking parts then washing then off in the driveway.
I soaked some bolts in carb cleaner and they aren't as clean as I want them.

so I was considering an ultrasonic parts cleaner until I watched a video of some mods on the harbor freight solvent parts cleaners.
the problem I have heard about with those is the water based solvents.
this guy was using petroleum based solvent (psc1000) with good results.

the problem with the ultrasonic cleaners is the size.
but I saw this 10L (2.5gal) one on ebay.

what do you think.
I may get both.

My issue is that the solvent parts cleaners are good to get the muck and gunk off..... They don't actually get the part to a presentable condition. For that I suggest a vibrating parts tumbler.......

I have the turbo oil pump and nuts and bolts mainly but I just ordered $80 in new hardware.

I haven't used a ultrasonic cleaner for auto parts......my wife uses one to clean her jewelry.
I'm no help on that.......

Ultrasonic cleaners are absolutely awesome, and have gotten ridiculously inexpensive. I'll clean virtually every internal transaxle part in my ultrasonic. However, NEVER use the ultrasonic for ball bearings or caged needle bearings. The balls/needles will etch a small imprint into the races.

PSC 1000 is a good first and second pass for cleaning. It absolutely eats through grease/oil/dirt that builds up. However, it doesn't do a great job with the more caked on stuff or stains. It's more for something like an oil leak would then get dust and dirt stuck in it and build up over time. That kind of stuff will come off with a light scrub with a wire brush. Also, you can't use the stuff sold in California, because that's a different chemical makeup. My buddy in San Diego used the stuff for a long time before moving there and says the stuff he can get is glorified water based solvents.

My fingers were raw from all the scrubbing, bolts, washers etc.

Purchased the Harbor Freight ultrasonic clear after recommendation from a friend. takes a bit of experimenting on length of time, strength of brew etc, but bolts/ washers etc come out looking amazing.

wat I have and use as I guess may suit best:
- degreaser (gallon)
- bakenoven cleaner (spray-on cans)
- brake cleaner (rattle cans)
- red rim-cleaner
- paint stripper

though all of these don't do their job fully without adressing the part with a brush or pressure washer to finish up

I used an utrasonic bath for the throttle and the cold-start distributor (inside the SC airbox) as channels inside these parts were to small to poke free by hand)

Purchased the Harbor Freight ultrasonic clear

I got one of these as well as the vibration/tumbler. ultrasonic cleaner works pretty well. use is now on bolts, nuts and small parts.

the problem I had with the tumbler on such parts is all the residue it leaves on the threads.

of course, scrubbing in the cleaning tank and bead blasting as a last resort.

i've had good luck using Purple Power and Simple Green in my ultrasonic cleaner.

I have the same one, with different name. It's a great unit. Can fit large pieces. It's annoying if you have to do few smaller parts as it would take so long to warm up the solution.

I was looking at the 30L unit that was longer. I’ve used my harbor freight little jewelry cleaner for a lot of things including brake calipers. They are awesome cleaning tools and a larger unit would be amazing.

I would strongly recommend being careful with the cleaners you use. Some of the cleaners will corrode aluminum. People say you can use them but if your not careful you’ll get white corrosion all over that will not come off without blasting or sanding. I know the original simple green would and I only used the Aircraft Simple Green version.

Get a basin type cleaner from Safety-Kleen. You will immediately know it's the best $400 you ever spent on tools.

Don’t see why it wouldn’t. I did the front calipers on 06 Civic Si in a harbor freight small sonic cleaner before in powder coated them. Having a larger one being able to do 2 or all at once would be awesome. I did do a little bit of scrubbing to get some of the big dirty spots. I then stripped mine completely before putting in. And just brushed with a plastic brush and turn them over. Remember I had a little jewelers unit, the one listed by op should clean all by itself.

For Baz, and anyone else who doesn't already do this, you can seriously turbo powwwaahhhh your sonic washer brew by mixing in some cleaning vinegar - makes quick work of even the worst filth and corrosion on all metals, including magnesium. For steel parts, I use about 1/5 vinegar, relative to the rest of the solution volume (water and Simple Green, typically), and for aluminum and magnesium I use a little less (and keep a closer watch on the amount of time I leave the parts in the washer). When parts are removed, I typically hose them down with brake cleaner to remove water, etc., and then treat them with Corrosion X (unless they are parts that I'm going to paint - no Corrosion X then).

Baz, a mix such as that would work very well on your crusty, dusty, musty and rusty calipers, Bro!

personally ,the best i have seen cleaning Porsche parts is --rocktumbler....it is an amazing how clean it will be...the company Mr.Deburr......
I f you can find somebody locally who has it that would be the best solution..

small ultrasonic cleaner - check

so what else dont I have and may need .....
