Bosch vs Beru rotor-confused

I ordered the Beru because it's $16 versus $63, but it doesn't seem to fit. I ordered the one from PP that should fit my 72, but it doesn't seem to want to go on (I didn't want to force it on) and when I compare the two, they're different.

What's going on here?

The original distributor for a 1972 911T was 0 231 169 003. I have one, and the Beru rotors like the one you purchased from Pelican, and the Bosch look the same and fit correctly.
Is your distributor original, what ID numbers does it have?
It does look old enough to be an original type early '70s rotor.

Here is a picture with the Beru rotor installed.

Thanks Sully. I don't want to force it on. It just seems not to want to click on.

Did you notice the configuration differences between the two? They're not the same.

They are not identical, but the key parts are basically the same, as you can see by looking at the contact tips, alignment tab and tension clips.

I'm sure the old one slides on easier than the new one, but as long as you have the alignment tab aligned up with the slot in the rotor shaft it will go on with a firm push and a little back and forth jiggle. I can understand not wanting to crack the plastic by forcing it.
You say you are in the Hudson Valley. If you are near Rockland County I could help install. As you can see in my previous post, I have that Beru rotor installed on my 1972 distributor.

Is the distributor itself in good condition? Here is a thread regarding internals.

Ok bud thanks. Now that the car is running (BIG success today!) I'll give the rotor and cap another try.
TY for the offer.

For rev-free driving I believe a VW distributor rotor will work. Maybe keep one for a back-up to the rev-limiting version. Has anyone ever confirmed that mechanism's cut-out operation intentionally?

From an archived response:
<<
I can now confirm that VW-Nr.055905225B & Bosch-Nr.1 234 332 300 is the correct part no. It fit perfect to an early 72 911 Bosch distributor.

And if you buy the cheap version from VW-Bus.com you get a finger for 3.50 Euro which is not a Bosch or Bremi and with no resistor in it.

They made it look like the Bosch but they potted a copper lead frame in it with no resistor. I opened it and could confirm it.

>>

FWIW, I can confirm, I had a VW rotor in my early ...159 002 Bosch distributor

I fit a VW rotor to my 2.7 when I put in an aftermarket CDI with soft rev limiter. I set the CDI 1 from Daytona-Sensors at 6600 RPM and love it. It just starts missing when you hit redline and not the sudden short of the centrifugal rotor.

and the CDI is 100% reliable to work at 6600 RPM.

Measure the i.d. of both rotors. If they're nominally the same, then take a small piece of emery or sandpaper & remove the sharp leading edge on the new plastic or bakelite or whatever it's made of. Since it's almost an interference fit that little bit of flashing is prolly holding you up.

Apparently, VW rotors fit either 13 or 15mm shafts. The indexing tab must also be compatible (not sure if there’s an industry standard for its position relative to no.1 TDC).

Thanks. It goes on the shaft, it's the inside tab that fits into the cut out on the rotors shaft that isn't slipping on. I thought of filing it a bit to take any edges off too.

I'm sure if you get the tab lined up with the slot in the distributor shaft it will go in without filing it. It takes a firm push. I don't know if you still have the dust cover, but this is in the manual regarding newer rotors and your distributor.

Thx Sullly. I took my dremel and shaved a little off the inside tab. It pushed on and fits snugly now.
