Cheap Respray

Hi,

My 79 SC is in need of some new paint. Looking for driver quality and can disassemble/assemble everything myself. Is there any way to get this done for a reasonable price? getting 15-20k estimates in the NY CT area.

Any info/recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Also: willing to put it on a trailer in the name of affordability if need be.

I assume you are in the NY/CT area, lots of guys on here (myself included) are in that area and someone will chime in with a good shop, I have not had any serious paint work done yet so I cant help much on that front.

There are also guys on here who have done it them selves with solid results on the cheap. The DIY route seems to be mostly about your ability to tolerate wet sanding for hours...

Yes - in the area. Willing to do what it takes to paint myself (I think), and not opposed to going with someone's recommendation. Going for perfection from about 10 feet away...

Are you looking for a complete/full///glass out motor out job...? If not, and I suspect not, it is because of your location.
I just had mine done for 10k ish and that included some other work too and it is beautiful.

Maaco. Do all the prep yourself and then buff it out yourself. 10 foot job for about a grand. Ask the guys in the shop who the best painter is. Prep is 95% and some of their guys are very good. Lots of experience and mess-ups cost them.

You need to come down south. I had a guy price me $5k for a complete respray with rust repair. I already had him repaint front and rear bumpers and valance for $425 with a perfect color match.

And yes I think windows out. Need to replace a bunch of seals, but would probably do that work myself

I’m down in TN. About 10 years ago, I had an 82sc painted for $1200. I took the whole car apart and delivered it in pieces to the painter. He did all of the bodywork and painted the car. The price included materials. He used Limco paint. He did a great job. I wet sanded and buffed myself. Looked like glass when I was done. I also had a 944 turbo painted by Macao. They have a base/clear paint job that usually starts at $2000 or so. The 944 was white, and it looked pretty good. If you just want a scuff and paint, that may make sense.

It’s about 4K here in TN to get a wrap. Also, most people do wraps to color change. It looks pretty silly to open the trunk/door jambs/hood to find the factory paint color.

I had mine resprayed in the summer of 2017. I had all the glass and sunroof out because I was replacing the seals and headliner. Door handles etc were removed. No rust or body work to deal with however. Cost $2500 and turned out pretty well.

+1 on the vinyl wrap

Five figure paint jobs have become the norm because they can... and skilled labor is a fortune. Quite honestly I would take the car apart and do it myself....

I've seen quality vinyl wrap jobs that looked absolutely incredible !

I went to Porsche Werks Reunion at Amelia Island last year. The had two groups: judged and non-judged. I was surprised at how many cars I saw in the non-judged group that were wrapped. It seems like it is becoming a more popular option.

Friends don't let friends wrap there cars. I always thought a wrap job would cost like $500 or about that. Then my neighbor told me he spent $6k to clear wrap his Cayman. It looks ok, but I can't imagine how itll look in 10 years. And how do you polish it when it gets swirls and scratches?
It by no stretch of the imagination looks as good as a nice clean paint job.
