Crane Optical Triggering of Bosch CDI
I just bought the Crane Optical Pickup Trigger and installation kit from Pelican and was wondering if anyone has a diagram detailing how to wire this up.
The instructions detail the install of complete Crane systems and such, but I'm looking to use the optical trigger to trigger the Bosch CDI and use the stock coil as per the Pelican catalog. I checked the archives but most installs seem to be the xr700 system. Anyone out there that can help? Regards, Andrew M 1970 911T |
I'm looking for similar guidance: Crane optical trigger to MSD in my '76 Carrera 3.

I did this roughly two years ago on my '72 T. You don't want to connect it directly to the coil. You need to find the wire that triggers the CDI to fire the coil. It took some probing with a meter to find the correct wire.
FWIW, my car didn't run properly when I had the xr700 connected directly to the coil (bypassing the CDI). |
Josh,
The OEM Bosch coil for CDI-systems only has a 1:100 turns ratio ... and was NEVER designed to have 12 Volts fed to its primary winding!!! Bypassing the CDI-system in a 911 requires a conventional [i.e., Bosch 'Blue' ] ignition coil be substituted ... |
This link should help.

Ron I sold my old ignition system to another fellow last year, went to crankfire.
I set up my optical trigger about 15 years ago when it was called an Alison xr700. from what I remember it was a pretty staightforward install. |
