Identification Help

Hi guys. First Post. If I’m in the wrong section let me know. I’m a newbie when it comes to the world of 911’s. Always loved them, never had one. Recently I’ve started thinking more about them and have started looking for a project car. I’m very mechanically inclined, restored several mid year corvettes and 69 camaro. Not worried about getting my hands dirty. I recently found a mess of a 911 and wanted to run this past the experts and see what they think.

First off, I’m not looking for a 100% original car when finished. I’d just like to have a nice driver. Back to the car…. The car I’m contemplating has been sitting in a guys storage unit for what looks to be an eternity. The guy the owns the car said he bought it from a guy that was going to make a track car out of it, he can’t remember if it was late 80’s or early 90’s. The rear qtr’s are opened up, I assume they were going to add flares but never got around to it. All the front sheetmetal is off, but it’s there. I didn’t see any bumpers anywhere, interior, although pretty rough/dirty is there, doors, glass all present. I can't find any rust on the car, the front torsion bar mounts are aolid and rust free. All pretty good so far…..

The car has an external oil fill door (seperate door behind passenger door). 1972 I think. I asked the gentleman for the title so I can compare the VIN to the body. Title is 1970. Huh… I swear I looked at that title 10 times thinking it would change to 1972. I check the VIN under the front lid (do you guys call that the hood or the truck) to the title, it matches. I check the engine S/N it appears to be from a 1973. It’s an MFI system. And the car runs…. Sounds great just sitting there idling…. Not drivable unfortunately.

So…. To make sure I’m not buying some hacked up stolen 911 are there any other VIN location on a 1970/1972 that can help me verify the car to title before I pull the trigger on this?

Thanks guys.

Garage
The ones I am aware of but not always there on our old cars:

The stamped VIN above the gas tank
The Aluminium VIN tag by the hood latch
The Color Code Tag on the hinge pillar
The Decal on the latch panel
The VIN is stamped under the radio on the lower portion of the dash, behind the right side knee pad.

Oh, and I call the front lid the "hood" but some call it the frunk.

Thanks Lou. Frunk it is

What is the Color Code Tag, What is a Hinge Pillar? Is that where the frunk hinges?

I was reading the ## under the radio is a production number that doesn't match the VIN. Is that correct?

Under the radio is a sequence number, not a VIN.

Driver's door hinge pillar... below the top hinge.
Should be a silver tag.
Has the paint code, paint mfg, on it.

Any 'gold' decals on the rear engine lid latch panel?

Some had VIN sticker on the door latch pillar (driver's).... but that didn't start until '81 or so, I think...

The production # on the lower dash frame can tell you something about the chassis and the VIN, so be sure to get that. Photos of every identification # would aid identification.
