Installing 911 R lexan windows?

Anyone have experience installing the "glue in" rear 911R lexan windows? Are they mounted in with screws/other hardware too, or just the GLUE. What type is correct? I would hate to mess up these nice looking windows! Thanks.

911R glue in rear windows

The following info may be of help,
Porsche 911R parts book states a material called "Sealing Cord" is used to glue in the two side windows, and rear window on the R, the brand name is "Bostik-Solbit" and is sold only by the meter, in length. It also states this materal only has a storage capacity of 6 weeks, so it may cure over time, The Porsche part number for the sealing cord is 999.915.080.00 (unknown if you can still order it). The rear side windows (louvered ones) use 1.7 meter of cord, and the rear window uses 3.4 meter of cord. The R windows, both side and rear are held in place by this sealing cord glue, which is black in color. The glue just bridges the gap between the body and the plastic windows. No screws. and/or hardware are used on the rear R windows. I have heard of a 3M product used to glue in the windows, but you must first mask off the entire area, both window and body, and just expose the gap between them. The glue is then applied by a caulking gun into the gap and smoothed over, the masking is removed just after the meteral starts to set, prior to full cure.

Sometimes things are not as easy as they look on paper! Perhaps the quality control of the newer lexan isn't as nice as the old original stuff - as the windows do not fit with an equal spacing all the way around the window. As such, I opted for 3 small discrete sheet metal screws to hold it in place for fitting...and then glued in the window using clear 3m adhesive. It turned out great, but I would have preferred to do it the original factory way. i will post some pictures tonight.

where did you purchase the windows from - gt? curious about the fit.

dd74 -- Based on material properties data for densities, it will cut the wt. by over half (about 55% depending on the eact mix in each). This may be modified by different thicknesses of each.

Why not check Jim Calzia's page on the 911S site and see if he posted that info in absolute terms.

I used the FG frames from getty and bolted the poly/lexan in.

You could bond the lexan for a cleaner waterproof look.

The advantage is that the frames space the window flush the with opening. Which looks good and reduces drag.

Original 911R windows (rear and quarters) have a 90 degree edge formed around them, you don't need the flush mount frame kit to install them. the edge of the R window holds the window up, flush to the body. The caulk then goes between the plastic window edge and the metal car body, hope this helps, new Lexan windows for the 911 don't have the same edge, thus needs the frame kit. The R did not have Lexan windows.
