Best CDI on a budget
I looked through dozens of threads on CDI units.
No doubt the best recommended CDI is the artisanal crafted products by Classic Retrofit. Neil's recommendation for the M&W means that it is also a top tier product. I give kudos to Classic for making a part that is greatly improved and looks original-ish and uses the factory connector. Also for offering a service to retrofit an old box. Awesome product line. Perfect for the 2.7RS restoration that I'll never be able to consider. However, what if your project is a 914 to 914-6 conversion that won't be going to a concours and just needs to work well. My '76 911 has been using a 20 year old Accel box with no issues and I wonder if that is still the way to go. One of the things I like about the accel box is that it was pretty small, smaller than the ubiquitous MSD 6 and offered multi-strike CDI as has been recommended for air-cooled 911 engines so many times. Holley brands include MSD, Streetfire, Accel and Mallory. I'm pretty sure all of the Holley brands that are about $160 are the same box with different covers. There are another half dozen brands out there that have more or less similar claims and are multi-strike CDI. Has anyone got a particular favorite or horror story about any of the currently available products? |

My vote is for the MSD streetfire. It is smaller and less expensive than the 6AL, and has worked very well for me.

I bought an MSD 6AL for my race car but I don't think I am going to use it if you are interested.
I put MSD in my 77s and my 930.

I have a Classic Retro box that I never fitted; its new. Make you a deal if interested. Its still on my shelf, new build motor makes it redundant.

Streetfire….they work perfectly and are inexpensive....then a blaster coil and lose the solid core spark plug wires for the wound type and a resistorless rotor.
The Streetfire is so inexpensive I bought two and carry a backup I'll probably never need. Timmy2 sells a very nice plug that will match the one on your car for a professional looking install.

I have one of the Heirloom quality CDI+ from CR on the project car (still not powered up, but it looks great!!!), but went with a Streetfire on the low-budget AutoX car and couldn't be happier.
