New Dash Question
 

I installed my new dash today. It’s from Stoddard. The fitment was a bit tight. It took some shifting and banging to get in. I think it passes the sniff test. And it’s better than a cover or my old warped cracked dash.

The front of the dash doesn’t have the cover for the screws. (This is an 83 sc.). Will this be hidden by the glass gasket? See the last photo.

New Dash Question
 

Had my dash on my 79 930 recovered in leather at the time I think it was around $1000 to recover and good luck finding a NOS leather dash for a early small vent dash..

Anyhow those screw holes on my 930 were for the leather at the very edge of the dash it screwed at the very front to keep the leather nice and straight.

Did your SC come optioned with full leather or a leather dash?

It did have a leather covered dash.

Looks like it will be very close to visible. My leather recover included a flap to run the screws through. Do you have the new seal? You could press it on the metal, without the windshield, to see how high above the sheetmetal it covers.

Compliment your new dash with new defrost plastic pieces. They are inexpensive and will look better and now is the time to replace them. Add interior screws. It's a two part interior screw that is black. It has a beveled top and cup washer with serrations on the bottom. The screw tightens down on the washer and the washer grips the vinyl. Even the vinyl dashes have screws across the perimeter. I believe it is hidden by the glass, but sun will eventually cause the it to peel back if it isn't secured.

His dash doesn't have the vinyl flap across the front edge the the screws go through.....

What brand is this dash?

Edit: check the Stoddard site and the dash pictured on their site for 77-85 appears to have the vinyl flap so they have obviously swtiched suppliers.. I doubt it much matters but it does seem like a departure from original.

The state of availability of new replacement dashes seems to be in a constant state of flux, the only constant being disappointment.

I don't have the seal yet. (Trying to decide which one to buy.) I'll try to fit it when I get it and see what happens. (Even if it does show a bit, I'm not sure what I can do about it now.) I'll put the screws back in the holes to at least seal those up.Maybe clean up that edge in case some of it does show.

Good idea on replacing the vents.

If anyone has any thoughts on which seal to buy - Genuine; OEM (there is 2 options on PP); or URO's new seal - I'd be eager to hear.

Last year when I replaced my dash / windshield I purchased a genuine Porsche seal from the dealer here - more expensive but apparently worth it. I had read that the Porsche seal was the way to go.
It worked great, no problems.

^^^ this. Lots of problems reported on after market seals.

I read some good reviews on the URO new designed seal with the wider lip. Hard to believe anything that cheap is better than the original, but may be worth a try?

Maybe some fresh black paint across the screw hole area would minimize its visibility, if the seal doesnt fully hide it.

The screws are visible from outside the car if one looks at just the right angle through the windshield.

I would clean up/repaint that area while you have the chance with the windshield out. You might want to put the trim screws back in the fill the holes. Back to Black on the defroster vents, too.

I am surprised that a Stoddard piece does not have the vinyl flaps to screw down.

I cannot imagine that dash doesn't have those flaps. On my car ('71), I can clearly see the flaps when looking through the windshield. FWIW, my original dash was not screwed down through the flaps, but they definitely hide the metal at the front edge of the dash and aid at holding the front even.

I would call Stoddard and ask them what is up. Perhaps someone bought it, trimmed the flaps off and then returned it?

As a last resort you could glue a strip of vinyl down across that area.

I went on Stoddard’s site. They list every team member on their website with phone and emails from president down. Pretty admirable.

I sent an email to their customer service person. Let’s see what they say.

I bought a new one from Lakewell a little while back but haven't installed it yet. I do have to say that the quality looks fantastic and the price was about $1200 including shipping from Europe to Florida.

I am pretty sure I got the same dash (but from CarPoint). It's good, but not great - quite a bit of fitting required. The outer finish is incredible, however. Most of the problems were solved by removing excess foam from the inner surfaces.

Mine does not have the dash speaker but may be otherwise the same/similar. I’ll keep your tips in mind. Thanks!

Hi Matt,

Checking in on the dash pad – those particular pads do not have that forward facing vinyl flap provided. You best possibility to duplicate would be to trim and install a similar piece of vinyl before installing the dash itself – then secure with the fastening screws and trim washers in black.

No attempt at hijacking this thread but with all the issues today with finding the correct parts for these air cooled G bodies as is stated above.

Wonders can be achieved with the old leather on these classic porsche! I had my dash,seats,door panels all replaced in full leather coupled with a new headliner. Of course as soon as those items are replaced the rest of the interior starts to look it’s age..

I was going to replace every interior panel at that point as it just bugged me..

Then I wondered on to a detailers forum that featured a very tired ferrari interior that was high sheen and looking just tatty..

I was amazed at what the detailer could do with high concentrate cleaner, leather cleaner, leather brushes and micro fiber towel specially made for cleaning leather.

What is happing during this process is yes the leather surface is being lightly scuffed but so is 40 years of glossy dirty ugly sheen.

What is left below is a supple satin finish as it left the factory .

I can’t tell you how excited I was to see my lower dash as well as my rear panels match perfectly my NEW leather.

This was one project that was well worth the $100 in detailing supplies and 40 hours of work!

Looking at this picture you can see left side is before and right side is after.

Simply amazing results.
