Question 911 T Alternator

While driving I noticed that my red alt light was on. I disconnected the battery to see if it was charging. The engine died immediately. I checked what I think was the voltage regulator and noticed I had no power to it. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have a multitester? Check voltage output at the battery posts, (either side battery will work) at various RPM. Fully charged battery, nothing on, you should get around 12.5 volts, while cranking the starter, this should drop to 10.5, and when engine is running, from 13.5 to 14.5 depending on the revs. (voltage should increase with RPM) These are approximate readings. You might also check fan belt tension, make sure it's not slipping. But it does sound like you could have either a bad alternator or voltage regulator...Book suggestion: "101 projects for your 911" by Wayne Dempsey...you can buy it here, from Pelican. Also, welcome to the board! Sorry I missed this earlier, but it seems you posted on the Cayenne board by mistake...hardly anybody goes there..

Do not (ever) disconnect the battery with the engine running. This can destroy the alternator. Follow pwd72s' suggestion with a multimeter; much safer and tells you more as well.

Also wiggle-test the hot lead from the alternator to to B+ post, both battery posts, the ground cluster in the left side engine compartment and the transmission ground strap to body(middle of car behind the cross-brace.
Voltage drops(loss) can be found with the "volt" setting and putting the leads on either end of the suspect wire. More than .1 volts can be a problem.
