The only thing that could possibly be holding that speaker deck in is either old glue activated and bonded by moisture, very strong speaker magnets (!), or you do in fact have a rear deck held on by four screws that (see below) are holding the deck in. This is something I want to do on my car btw.

But you never answered my question: do you have a pair of luggage strap "U"s on the back of your deck?

I did this last weekend to try to correct a bit of warpage and to disconnect an old pair of speakers. What I found was 4 screws which, once removed, allowed lifting the whole horizontal and vertical piece out. Once slip clip in the center as already reported. However, on the subject of straightening out thewarpage. The upholsery is attached to crummy hardboard like you have in the door panels. I tried to bend a bit but it didn't correct the warpage. It just sprung back. I suppose you could attache metal to the underside so you could control it, but I opted to just clean it up and put it back in the car.

I know it can't be just glue because I lifted the whole thing and leaned at least half my body weight back to try to pull it off... no go. As for the U's, since I don't know what you're referring to, it's safe to assume I don't have them.

But thanks CrossT for mentioning the irreversible warpage. That also is very good information... if I ever get the darned thing out, that is.

On the subject of warpage , if you want to save money do what I did with the door panels . Soak them in the bath till they are in your judgement 'soaked' , about 6hrs then apply weights to get the desired shape , I used dumbell weights

Like Bones says. I rebuilt the entire rear deck with material from Perfect Fit. What you are going to find is material (what I replaced), thin layer of foam, then a real hard fiberboard in two pieces making up the horiz (speakers) and vert. (behind folding seats).

You'd have to soak it to get it to take a different shape. If you are good with your hands, you can separate the horiz. piece from the vertical (note two pin holes for realignment) and replace only the horiz. piece. Here you'd only be dealing with hefty staples (two types of staples are used in building these). Let me know if you need any instruction in this direction.

So no luggage hooks then. Very strange. When you finally get this thing off you'll see the two pair female threaded holes that I am sure are holding your deck in. Might be worth a peelback of the engine bay sound pad to get a look at the underside, if you'll even be able to see anything - never tried this.

Best of luck!

Jdub-
What year is your car? Depending on the year, the female threaded holes might be unused rear seatbelt mounting points. Although rear seatbelts didn't arrive in US until 1988, I believe all 84+ cars had the mounting points since ROW cars had rear seatbelts installed.

Steve:

They are pretty far towards the back, each "bridge" shape about 3" across with the 2 threaded holes (5x.8? - 6x1?) about 2" from center to center. They are aligned perfectly across the center line of the body of the car (east/west).

The fact that they are so far back, behind the speakers, and close in to one another makes me think I am looking at the female side of the luggage brackets. But I know so little about how those upside-down U's fit that I don't quite know what I am looking at. Plus, the speaker deck was put in by a PO I am sure.

Thanks!
John

Just a WAG here-since everything else is disconected, do you have rear speakers? Is it possible that someone used extra long screws when installing them and screwed them do the deck? This is common with door panels (actually preferable).
