how to remove rear 'shelf'?

I was taking a look at my rear interior today and attempted to disassemble it. I wanted to remove the back shelf that the speakers are mounted in because I wanted to bend back some of the warpage, but I couldn't see any clips I needed to pull out. I unscrewed all the seat button snaps and gave that whole back piece a little tug, but didn't want to break anything. Did I just not pull hard enough? Is it hooked in somehow?

Thanks.

I don't know, but my guess is there could be two clips on the back of the shelf that face forward-lift bottom and wiggle towards the glass(?)

Just make sure you have all the screws out then gradually pull up the corners gingerly there could be a little glue back there. I know the side pieces may need to be removed as they may pinch the back piece. Just take your tme.

On mine ('78 SC), once all the screws are removed you must lift up on the "seat back" portion, there's a (sort of) "lip and catch" behind the center of it that must disengage. Then the rear deck and "seat back" portion comes out as an assembly. Once it's out you'll see how, when re-installing, it must be slid down to re-engage that catch.

I didn't know that..
I also stopped a removal before maybe breaking something.. so you lift it until it disengages.. or do you slide your hand under there to move the "catch? ...................Ron

The catch is about halfway down the seat back which lifts upwards as one piece. Be gentle when lifting the back upwards as depending onhow tight it is fitting you could pull the hook section of the fastener off , as I did . It was fixable with some glue though and not noticeable either . Just pull or push the seat back up when all other fasteners have been removed and it should come out

Just like "Bones" said. There's a sheetmetal lip on the seatback that slips into a sheetmetal "receiver" on the firewall. For removal it may help to press back slightly on the seatback to remove any tension as you slide the asembly up. It only has to go up 30-50 mm (varies from car to car) for the catch to disengage. The tricky part is blindly lining up the lip and catch so they re-engage when you slide the assembly down during re-installation.

OK.. when you guys say the "seatback", you mean the package shelf directly under the window ?

and I may be able to slide a big screwdriver/whatever to the clip to help removal, and push/wiggle the shelf............Ron

The "package shelf" is attached to the seatback. It must come out as an assembly. I know of no way to remove just the shelf.

There totally right slipped my mind there is a catch behind there You do have to lift up and the shelf and back are attached.

Hey guys... thanks for all the replies, but that catch wasn't the obstacle that's stopping me. It actually wasn't hooked on there at all. At the very end of the shelf, right by the window, there are two 'things' holding the shelf to the firewall. I can't get those things off because I can't see nor feel what they are. A good spirited pull doesn't help either. Does anybody else have these anchors or is it just me?

Try to use a gentle wiggle if you can, when it starts moving you'll know that way is right. Mabye theres evidence under the engine soundpad of screw-ends or the clips.

More data please! Are the two "things" a pair of upside down "U" shapes?

I just recently did this job. Should be a thread on my name related to this with pics if you do a search. But anyway, in my '74 there were a couple of sharp, triangular sheetmetal tabs that went through the thick rubber pad underneath the back shelf that anchored it in place. They are very sharp so be careful. They basically go through slits in the pad and are then 'bent' to hold it down. This may be what's holding you back. Basically, there is the naugahyde, then below that the rubber pad and then the sheetmetal of the body...go though that and you're in the engine compartment!

I have a '78 Targa with the rear speaker "elevated" package shelf. I have been trying to figure out how to use the pair of brackets on the sheetmetal, under the shelf, each with two threaded holes, to mount luggage "U" holders above the shelf and thusly hold down the package shelf firmly.

Does anyone have any insight on how this might be done? I cannot figure out how the luggage "U" is screwed to these as they appear to be "blind" screwholes. Through the underside of the engine bay?

John

EDIT: Here is BigChill's thread: Question for Bell or other stereo guys...

Always Wong--
How many screws did you remove from the rear deck - your post mentions I unscrewed all the seat button snaps and gave that whole back piece a little tug, but didn't want to break anything. Did I just not pull hard enough? Is it hooked in somehow?

THERE ARE 4 screws that hold the deck in - 2 that also hold the seat button snaps, and two below that, almost to the seat cushion.

Also, not sure what the 'things' which you refer to are, but you might also try this: Remove the upholstery 'cap' next to the rear seats - on my '85 Targa it is held in with 2 screws (the caps are under the side windows.

Other than the 4 screws and the little 'tab', I don't think there is anything else holding the rear deck in SC/Carrera vintage 911s other than friction. By removing the caps, you'll get a little more wiggle room.

The removal motion is UP (slightly) to disengage the tab behind the rear seat back, then FORWARD (toward you) to slide it away from the rear window.

Well so far, and not surprisingly, it looks like I'm the only one with these extra anchors. The rear deck seems to fastened in two spots equidistant from the sides, at the furthest edge, almost at the glass. Pulling up and out has no effect nor does sliding my arm all the way underneath it and attempting to lift up. They must be some type of screw for it to be held so tightly. Is it possible to look through the engine compartment to get underneath it all? I haven't tried that yet because there seems to be a lot of matting in the way.

Thanks all.
