Difference in gear shift mechanism

Hi All, I'm currently restoring a -71T. It was all in boxes when I bought it, some of the parts were not accurate.

I got a correct -71 5-speed with the deal.

Is there any difference between the 4-speed and 5-speed gearshift lever and attached hardware? I'm thinking since the gear shift pattern is different.

If this is the case, please let me know how I identify the lever I have.

Thanks in advance,
Jörgen Forssling

It's buried in boxes of parts. I'll dig it out this weekend.

Thanks,
Jörgen

Ok. So it is for 5-speed or 4-speed or both?

That looks like the one year only 1972 shifter for a 915 transmission I recently listed on Pelican. That little cam held in place with the roll pins and the two small springs are not in the two 901 shifters that I have. Here in the shop

My '71 T has the heater controls back by the parking brake, that shift mechanism looks like it has the slot for it near the front if I'm not mistaken? However my car also has a later transmission that was put in by the previous owner so maybe I'm wrong on this

According to the parts diagram/ parts numbers I have, the only difference between the 4 and 5 speed is the knob.

Here is a shot of my original '71 shifter. The slot for the heater is still there, but not used on my '71.

Thanks Gordon and all above. What do you think of rgofast comment regarding -72 year only with the extra little cam? Should i remove it to make it work with my 901(911) -71 5-speed?

Appreciate all your help!

Now that I look at your shot in post #2 and #7, it does look like you might have the one year only '72 shifter.

Here is a shot of mine so you can see the difference. I will also post the breakdown I have.

Thanks Gordon.
It certainly is a -72 shifter I've got. Since they have all different shift patterns I have to get another one or at least get another stop plate. (14) in my second post.

Is the pin marked with an arrow riveted or welded in place? I've got the hole for it in my main bracket and I figure it might be an easier fix than locating a new shifter here i Sweden.

Hi Again, I have a pin on the other side similar to the one with the arrow above. I used a drift to get it out. If it's long enough maybe I can use it.

Would you be able to measure how far it protrudes on the other side?

I also ordered a new stop plate.

If anyone has use for the -72 parts, let me know.

Other than the preference to use the correct MY parts, I would suggest considering replacing it with a 73-86 shifter. Bolts in, doesn’t care if 4 or 5 speed, more precise (relatively speaking).

911 shifters are just levers. Detents are in the gearbox.

Are you sure they are a bolt on? Considering the different gear layout on a -71 gear pattern. The reverse is in different positions.

OK, here is a shot of mine showing the pin. It appears to be spot welded.

After looking closely at the picture of your shifter, it does indeed look to be a '72. Too bad you are on the other side of the world as I would be willing to sell my unused shifter.

Yes I'm on the other side of the pond... But isn't it nice to get help from all over the world!

What I would need from you Gordon, if you could be so kind, is if you could measure the length of the pin protruding on the backside.

I enjoy my restoration and these "bumps on the road". Since I've bought my car in parts and not complete I have some work to do... It's not the first time I found out that I got the wrong parts for my car.

Thanks a bunch from a cold and rainy Gothenburg Sweden!
