Air filter options for a 3.6 swap
I have a 3.6 in an 84 coupe with a dirty K&N air filter. I've never been a fan of aftermarket air filters in part due to religion and in part because I don't really like the noise increase.
Anyone have a solution they like? I'm not sure a stock airbox will fit, as my ICV is hitting the engine pad. Should I just buy another universal/conical B035B4 and stop overthinking this? Besides a wonky cold idle the car runs great. ![]() |

I have a stock air box/filter on the 3.6L in my '74 911 and it fits. My 3.6L looks to be a little earlier than yours; I think it's a '90 w/the aluminum intake.
FWIW, I had a K&N cone filter initially, but when I had the motor rebuilt by Rothsport, Steve W. suggested I return to a stock airbox/filter as it flows the best. (the cover is drilled)... Tom

Ah, I should mention the motor is from a '95.
Do you have any photos of your setup? My car is far away at the moment, so I had to use an old photo that hides most of the intake. Is drilling the stock intake a common thing? I'm always wary of "free" improvements that the factory neglected to take advantage of. |

I don't know if there are dimensional differences between a '90 & '95 intake. Or a '74 & '84 engine bay for that matter. The ICV sits really close to the top & might even squish the engine sounded slightly in my car for example.
I'll try to remember to take a photo... (not parked at my house currently). It's a tight fit, but it DOES fit. On the drilled cover - I think it's pretty common. Rothsport did it when they installed it, so it MUST do something... ??

Per Bill's comments, a little trimming on the right side of the stock airbox allowed the decklid hinge to clear. Tough to see in this pic but the right side is mostly open now.

Who knew there could be so many variations on an airbox in so few model years?
It looks like my best bet is to find a '95 airbox and try and make it fit with a bit of scrubbin'. |

Well. I picked up an OEM airbox, and it looks like it could fit...but not until the intake or engine is removed.
![]() I dunno what I expected. I'm gonna have to mull this. |

Bump-
Anyone have any experience getting a stock airbox in a swapped car once the motor is installed? My swap was done by the PO and has a cone filter. I PM'd Tremelume, he has sold the car and does not remember if he ever got the stock box in or not. Thanks!

I've done it on an '89 motor in my '83, while I was routing AC lines in that area....
It's a tight fit, but if you take the airbox apart you can get it in there, mount the inner plastic bits to the intake and then slide the cover and filter into place. It's really rough getting the clips to lock on at the back of the air box, but it can be done

I also run the stock airbox on the '89 3.6L engine that's in my '74 911. I don't remember if there was anything that I had to modify to make it fit, but if there was, it wasn't major. I had Rothsport rebuild the motor for me a few years ago and I asked at the time what the best air filter arrangement was to use and stick with stock was their reply...
I don't have any experience trying to make the swap in situ however. Tom

This air horn draws air from under the deck lid vents. Nice but $$$
