Re-installation of steering rack

I am trying to re-install the steering rack but I am having trouble inserting the splined end into the clamp in the smugglers box. It does not seem to be lining up. Any suggestions?

Loosen everything all the way up .
One it’s in and all together tighten everything then go for a slow drive around the block before torquing it all the way .

I am just supporting the bottom of the rack with a jack. I don’t have the cross member in yet so I have plenty of room for adjustment. Plus the lower shaft bushing keeps it in position. The clamp just does not seem to line up well.

I'd pull the bolts from the clamp. And probably install the cross member to support the rack and get it into position. At a guess, you have jacked the rack up a bit too high. When you raise the rack on the cross member with spacers, the rubber bushing under the clamp has to distort to allow the bearing and rod to work. If you raise the rack too much (which is hard, as it hits the chassis not far above its normal or permissible raised position)you can't get the bearing into place at all.
