Warm start issue on 1987 3.2 - different than SC?

I’ve searched the forum and all the ‘warm start issues’ I turn up are for the SC and Carrera prior to ‘87. I believe ’87- ‘89 has a different version of the Bosch fuel injection (L-Jetronic?). I’m guessing the reason for warm start difficulty might be different in these (for example, it doesn’t seem to have a fuel pressure accumulator next to the fuel filter – is it just located somewhere else?).

The specific issue… Usually starts great when cold, fires right up on the first turn of the engine and runs steady at fast-idle, then soon drops down to normal idle w/o pulsing or surging. Runs great!
Once it has warmed up a little (just where the temp gauge starts to move), if I shut it off and then go to restart it, it will turn over a lot without starting. However, if I give it a very tiny bit of gas (barely push on the pedal), it will start right up. Also, it does not do this every time. Sometimes it starts right up as if it were cold… and the amount of time it sits doesn’t consistently make a difference. Sometimes a quick stop after about 2 miles of driving causes the issue, other days, same trip same duration of stop doesn’t cause an issue.

Specifics about the car: 1987 3.2 Carrera, 167K miles (rebuilt at 116K), Steve Wong Chip, M&K pre-muffler with O2 sensor. Problem has existed for a while (before SW Chip and pre-muffler), it isn’t a big problem so I’ve ignored it, but I would like to fix it at this point. Also, did a full tune up a few thousand miles ago (so O2 sensor and fuel filter are pretty much new)

I’d appreciate any ideas … I know the right way is to do a pressure check on the system, but first I’d like to know if there are some likely culprits (like the fuel accumulator and check valve on the K-Jetronic cars).

Thanks in advance!

First guess would be cylinder head temp sensor.

Thanks! I'll check that out. Guessing from threads about the CHT, that if it's a 2-wire one it's less likely to be an issue, but if it's a 1-wire unit that's a likely culprit?
