Question Factory short shift kit / 73.5 911T?

Hello
Does anyone knows whether the Porsche factory short shift kit will work with my 1973.5 911T with the original 915 transmission?

How is the weltmeister shift kit compare to the factory short shift kit?

It will work.

According to an exhaustive article by Dickerson and Gagnon in Vol. 8 of Up-Fixin, the factory short shift kit shortens the throws 25%; the Weltmeister, 39%. That said, you may want to know that the decreased leverage as a result of this modification affects the shift feel to a certain extent. I have the factory short shifter in mine. I haven't driven a 911 with the WM kit, but some people say it affects the shift feel too much; others say it's fine.

Others will have their opinions, I'm sure.

search previous threads on this topic..............i installed a factory short shift kit in my '73 911 E w/915. i can't speak to the WM kit (others on the BB can).

it was a very easy job (1 - 2 hours max). while there, i replaced ALL bushings in the shifter side of the tranny (why not? a few bucks more while the shifter is apart), then redid the shift coupler bushing at the rear part of the car).

i was very pleased with the results of the short shift kit (i needed it to drive with my newly installed race seat). shifts were very crisp, although it requires a positive effort to put the car into the proper gear. this is not a bad thing, considering how a stock 915 shifter feels like a tractor gear shift.............

the bushing replacement was straightforward, except the shift coupler took some forethought and post installation adjusting.

there is a technical article on this website for instructions, many threads if you get stumped, plus 101 Projects explains it as well. not to mention the cumulative brainpower of this BB, which i am sure amounts to thousands of P-years !

When I do install my short shift kit, do I go ahead and change my shift rod coupler, inner boot and outer boot as well?

i don't know what you're referring to by "inner and outer boot", but i did ALL plastic bushings that are in the shifting system:

1). ball socket (bottom of shift lever)
2). bushing (helps guide the shift rod)
3). shift coupler bushing (in the shift coupler itself accessable between the small metal cover between the rear seats)

prior to goofing with the shift coupler, read the technical article and take your time. this small device affects how easily your transmission goes into gear, and a small amount of mis-adjustment could make your shifter a little difficult to get into gear.

There's an inner and outer boot where the shift rod enters the end of the tunnel. Replace them if needed, but they have no bearing on the shift quality. The bushings that tmctguer describes are the ones to replace if worn.

will the short shift kit fit a car with a 901 tranny?

The factory short shift kit (911.424.931.00 and available from the PP store), will work with a 901 gearbox when installed in a 915 shift housing with a Gate Shift kit (also available from PP). It works like a charm. Here's a link to a recent discussion:

If my failing memory serves Dickerson and Gagnon also recomended updating the shifttower itself to the later pieces. Maybe the 84 up? but I don't remember the year detail exactly.

The '77 and later shift housings differ in that the free play for side-to-side lever motion was adjustable. This housing is identified by a large threaded nut and set screw on the front base of the shift tower. Earlier housings have split pins acting as a pivot. The later housings also have a one-piece fork (versus 2-piece) in which the shift lever pivots inside the housing.

This is the early shift housing:


BTW, with a Gate Shift kit is installed, the spring-tension supplied by the kit eliminates the need for any lateral adjustment afforded by a late shift housing.

PS:
The '85-'86 shift housings, feature what Dickerson and Gagnon call a factory semi-short shifter. This shortens the shift throws slightly, although not as much as the optional factory short shift mechanism (M241) available in these years.
