fuchs clear coated or not

i have an 89 anniv edition silver and was wondering if the originial fuchs would be clearcoated on the lips from factory or not

some tire cleaner i just used seemed to overspray and etch the lip of the wheel...really annoyed but now need to figure out how to remedy it

thx

Clear anodize is the typical finish.

If that got etched... Yikes!

I know some people, when refinishing wheels, use oven cleaner to chemically attack the anodize.

What kind of tire clean was used? It sounds horrible.

Heat is a factor. Brakes make the wheels pretty hot. Touch your wheels after a spirited run...hot as hell.

factory Fuchs are not clear coated. post a pic of the issue
if the anodizing has been discolored, its likey only a re-anodize will repair it.

this is the product used

so on my mercedes i have a set of oz aero 3 piece wheels which have bare aluminum on the lips, and i go through the process of hand polishing them yearly with mothers metal polish. you know you get that black residue when it works and u know they are NON clear coated

i tried a little of that on the fuchs and it did not turn black thus wondering about clear coated or not.....but i guess if its anodized then its a whole nother scenario to deal with

i was thinking of using some 2000 grit wet sand and see if that does anything...but check with u all first

Sanding won't do a thing. It sounds as if the anodizing has either been damaged or stained. Cleaners for anodized wheels need to be pH neutral, either acidic or alkaline can permanently damage the anodizing.

so annoying because it wasnt on there for than 15 seconds just as i was spraying the tire...ill take somepics later

I see nothing on that page for the product that says anything about being safe for alloy or aluminum wheels. I can't enlarge and read the labeling on the bottle image used on the ad though. If there is no mention, there is probably a reason.

Don't sand them. Once you lose the anodizing you will get all sorts of corrosion.

If you don't get a better solution you could put some of the tire cleaner evenly over the rims to get an even color.

It must be nasty stuff. My perfect wheels get peed on by dogs very often. It's their way of saying hello to other dogs in remote destinations. And no staining from the pee.

vdubpower, without seeing the discoloration your working on it's hard to make a good recommendation. I had very good results on the anodized outer edges that the previous owner had let go until they were quite dull and had a white discoloration. After trying the Mothers foam polishing cone that did not make a difference I purchased some muslin cloth polishing wheels for my drill and used Mothers Power Metal polish. The muslin works like a buffing wheel, work slowly and without too much pressure when you start. You'll get the hang of it after a while. I was able to make them very presentable at little cost, just a little labor. Good luck.

Some Fuchs are painted, so yes it is possible that there may be clear coat on the rim.

My anniversary car has some water spotting from age etc int eh anodizing. I might try the muslin cloth idea above. I a also planning on having another set of wheels done up to look like the factory ones, so I can save the factory ones. They are getting hard to get now.

Let us know how the muslin works.

picture came out upside down but u can see on outer edge

that is where I oversprayed the tire cleaner.

the tire cleaner doesn't comment about wheels because its not for wheels...

Vdubpower. That is on anodizing no clear coat. Mine looked similar. I’m sure you can make that at least acceptable with a round muslin ball and a muslin buffing wheel. Go slow at first you don’t want to burn thru the anodizing.

vdubpower 03-21-2020 05:27 PM

thanks ... this muslim will give muslin a chance

Don’t forget to post photos when your done for comparison.
