Replacing Charcoal Canister on 3.2
I recently discovered that the charcoal canister on my 1984 Carrera was cracked, so i found a nice replacement from ebay (via Autobahn Dismantlers, apparently from a 3.6 but they say it is 3.2 compatible).
It appears to be the same size as the old one, and was a lot cheaper than a new canister from the dealer. I was just curious, though, does it matter how I orient the canister when i install it? For instance, should the engine connection be on top, so that it is less likely to pull in any liquid that condenses? (I'm not even sure if liquid collects in these) Also, the fresh air vent is on the opposite side, so the U shaped hose would be pointing the opposite direction in the car... should i snip the end of the hose off so it is pointing the same way as before? Am I overthinking this? Charcoal Canister thread hijack
Sorry I cant answer you Graham, but have another question on your subject.
Do these Canisters need replacing after a certain time or mileage? I have a 1973 with 140,000 miles and looks good from the outside. :D |
delete it. way simpler than chasing a replacement or worrying about failure.
|
It is required for areas that do emissions testing. You will notice more gasoline smell in a garage without it. It really does have a purpose.
|
How do you plumb it when you delete it? Do you connect the tank vent to the air filter port?
I do not need to go through emissions testing, but I also don't like smelling gasoline, so i'll probably keep it. Mine was definitely bad, as it would let some little charcoal bits in to my air filter housing. When i was using the stock 3.2 airbox it was acceptable, as they would just fall to the bottom of the airbox, but if i connected the canister hose to my MSDS cone filter adapter they would go straight through the AFM and in to the engine. Probably not great for the motor. |
When I purchased my 1988 3.2 there was no canister and I have never smelled a gas odor in the garage. Given that, where was the canister?

Hi GTC- Hopefully, several pictures are worth a few words. I was able to source an OEM version 928 201 014 04 several years ago (1986 3.2 Coupe). I intend to install, but here's a full overview, including the factory original part still in its original location. It seems to me, you don't even need a hose for the "Luft" (Ambient Air) nozzle on your replacement part, as it's already pointed in the right direction. I suspect someone at Porsche realized that the part could be simplified for the 3.6 by simply having Purolator revise the design. One less hose, clamp and strap!

Thanks for the photos and suggestions. Seems like the motor connections is always on the bottom, so I'll do the same when I install the new one.

I deleted mine in my 84 after finding little carbon pellets in the air box. No adverse effects.
|
Shaun, what did you do with all the hose connections?
|
I don't remember exactly, I'll look after work today Graham.
|
Don't worry about it, i was just curious. I already have the new canister, so I will still install it regardless.
|
Ok.

I expect an obstructed line or cannister somewhere, since my gas tank pulls a strong vacuum as gas is used during driving. For a long time I "solved" this by not fully turning my filler cap tight. I'd rather put a cap on the airfilter box, distegard the cannoster and allow air into the tank at some place else as breather. Thanks for any suggestions ! (I have a,late 1988 3.2 by the way, ROW, 1st delvery Germany) |
My vent lines were all very old and deteriorated, especially the ones in the fender and engine compartment. I am still slowly working back towards the tank, but the new charcoal canister and nearby lines seem to have fixed my vacuum issue for now.
|
Unless you like the added weight back there toss it!!!
They're heavy too |
No one answered the question of what to do with the lines if you remove the canister.
|
I won't be able to look for a few days.
|
I just removed mine, if anyone is looking for one.....
