1971 911T Hot Rod Build.
So, I made the mistake of watching the "Urban Outlaw" video.
Having been a fan of the 911 since I was a kid and a long time subscriber to Excellence, the video pushed me over the edge. I picked up a few books from pelican parts, thanks Wayne. Picked up a clock for the car. ![]() ![]() Got some tools, thanks to the Craftsman Christmas sale. And 3 months after watching that damn video, loaded this on the trailer. ![]() The car is a very solid 1971T that someone decided to modify to look like an SC. I will be backdating/ rightdating this car. The flares will stay and a ducktail and longhood will be added. Exterior, dark silver metalic with very dark red stripes. Interior, charcoal with dark red leather. Enough leather to make cows mad, as my friend Ian describes it. The engine is a 71T that at one point had dropped a valve. The piston was replaced but the engine never ran right. The PO took it apart and realized the engine now has 5 s pistons and 1 t. Explains the rough running. The game plan is a 2.4 crank, twin plug with s pistons and an EFI setup. Trying for a flat 200hp curve. Tranny is original as well. This is a long term project, my guess being 3 years with me doing as much work as possible. With any luck, I can put 1,000,000 km on it before they bury me in it. First we strip and get the pieces ready for paint. And yes I have backup!!!!! ![]() Cheers Rob |

I maintain that forward dating has preserved a number of long hood cars that otherwise may not have survived this long. Looks like you have found a good one hiding under those SC bumpers. (Mine started this way but the previous owner got in too deep before it was converted back, and he bailed).
The nice thing about a project car like this one is that it can be done incrementally while still enjoying driving it. Having picked up his project and taking it to the end, if it were me I would: 1) Get it up and running mechanically first. 2) Dive it a bit and have some fun 3) Buy rear bumper and duck tail (unless you are doing a full restore) 4) Install those rear parts with some funky complimentary paint (like Magnus did with his white red/blue race car) 5) Drive some more 6) Convert the front back to a long hood (same paint idea) 7) Drive even more Eventually tackle the trim and full body paint, but if it were me that would be way off in the future and would be a step in the car's evolution. I also wouldn't be concerned about doing some jobs twice (like painting the bumpers and then repainting them at a later date when the rest of the car gets done up). (To quote another thread, be careful not to turn it into a box-ster. Too many project end up that way since it is easier to take these apart than put them back together). Go for quick wins. Good luck!

Thanks very much for all the kind words.
The aim is to do it properly and to do it right. Wanyer is bang on and that would be the advice I would give any friend who came to me with the same project. Having said that, I am doing the opposite. I have rescued a couple of bikes from boxster status, including a 59 BSA that literally came in boxes. The "clock" is a period correct Heuer rally master pair. Tag is doing reissues and they look great. Since every car has some surprises for you, here is my first. ![]() ![]() For some reason, my magnet won't stick to my 911T brakes. Let's hope all the surprises are this good. |

The tear down continues!
I hope everyone had a great Christmas. Got a lot of sledding done but not as much work done to the car. ![]() That is helper #2 enjoying the snow. Here is the car as of this afternoon sporting some of it's original yellow. ![]() Lots of pictures and many zip lock bags later... Some rust in the expected spots but over all, its a pretty clean tub. ![]() All four window corners have some rust. ![]() Here is the worst of it so far. As for the parts; Front fenders are here, as is a new front bumper. The folks at TRE are making me a Touring steel rear bumper to fit the sc flares. Gary Stratton has made and shipped a ducktail that I can't wait to see. Great guy, we chatted for half an hour on the phone. I ordered HID lights and some new VW housings, and am looking forward to mocking them up. For the most part, that's it. Just slowly plodding away and documenting as I go. Cheers Rob |

Great project. Keep up the good work.
btw, the nose of that car is not from an early car. I suspect that the car has had a front clip, or partial clip installed. Its not just the nose/latch panel section, the entire front bumper mounts have been swapped to ones that hold the later bumpers, in lieu of the early battery boxes. This will not hold you back but you need to be aware so that your new longhood actually fits. the TRE hood for a backdate is your best bet.

Hey, my 73.5 was the same color yellow originally, and looks like the same color red now!
Keep it up.
