Another Carfax request

If anyone has time to run this (at no $ cost to you) it would be a help. I have a PPI scheduled tomorrow morning.

That'a all carfax had on file. Not much use?

MarkP 04-08-2003 11:08 AM

Thanks a lot Paul. Seems to support the sellers story - 85, one owner, 25,000 miles.

If the PPI supports this along with a review of the service documents by a fellow Pelicanhead - sounds like I found a car!

Thanks again.

ewave 04-08-2003 11:14 AM

How much is the car? Come on! Share the info!!!

Wavey 04-08-2003 11:38 AM

You guys really should take this Carfax stuff offline - it's unethical to use the service this way. MarkP, what's your problemn with paying for the service?

ewave 04-08-2003 12:51 PM

Thank you Wavey for your opinion.

My Opinion is:

1) "This account includes Unlimited CARFAX Vehicle History Reports and Unlimited CARFAX Safety & Reliability Reports. It is scheduled to expire on xxx/xx/xxxx"

2) From thier site EULA: "Except as otherwise expressly permitted under copyright law, no copying, redistribution, retransmission, publication or commercial exploitation of downloaded material will be permitted"

The information that I have provided is in the puplic domain... It is Public information from the State and City Governements that collect it, and the Vehical manufactures in regard to recalls. As such, I believe it is NOT copyrightable.

Thanks again for your opinion.

Schuey 04-08-2003 12:53 PM

AMEN ewave :)

jrdavid68 04-08-2003 01:03 PM

I don't see anything in the EULA for CarFax that indicates that running a VIN # for someone else is any kind of violation.

In fact, I would think that it is free advertising and exposure for CarFax. Based on the quick and useful results that I have seen posted on this site, the next time I am in the market I will open an account with them.

Question: The other day I lent my wireless phone to a friend to make a call using some of my free minutes (it would have been a charged Long Distance call from his land line). Would that be unethical too? Should I have told him to get his own wireless phone/plan?

MarkP 04-08-2003 01:07 PM

Paul, they are asking $23k. I haven't negotiated yet - we'll see.

Wavey - hadn't really thought about it, but now that you bring it up - I'm a capitalist to the bone, so as a replacement for my shortsightedness I'll double down (carfax is $20) and make an extra $40 charitable contribution to this cause:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/105552-helping-out-fellow-p-car-owner.html

Care to match me? :)

Wavey 04-08-2003 01:11 PM

It's not the information you're paying for, it's the service to gather it. If you don't want to pay for the service, why don't you take the time to gather it from all the various sources yourself? You don't consider this redistribution of downloaded material? You may think you're getting one over on Carfax, but all you're doing is abusing the service in a way that will probably raise the rates for the rest of us legitimate users.

How about this - I'll set up a site called Wavey's Carfax, I'll pay the standard rate, then I'll provide free Carfaxes for anyone who asks me. How long do you think Carfax will continue to provide the service?

I'll double that and donate $80.

Matched - thanks!

Mark,
With low miles like that, be sure to include an oil taste test in the PPI.:phttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/king2.gif

Truly our pleasure, Dave! You will be in our thoughts and prayers, my friend.

Wellllll?

MarkP 04-09-2003 12:23 PM

Looks like I need to get on the phone and do a little negotiating - just for grins though. The car passed with a strong reccomendation from a 30 year P car mechanic. No faults other than a light scratch on the drivers door. Under 25k original miles.

I will post some photos from home this evening.

Mark Wilson 04-09-2003 12:52 PM

What did the oil taste like?

Hope that one works out for you. I should be up there about targa time. You guys feeling OK?

MarkP 04-09-2003 05:23 PM

The oil was nice & fresh.

Here are some photos. Any body shop folks want to tell me about repairing the light scratch on the passenger door?

Just slap a Carrera sticker over it. ;-)

Trying to match the original paint is going to be pain. Car looks great though!
