Almost pooped a little.. some times taking closeups isn’t good. Oil line fun..
 

I don’t have a lift, so when I bought my car I loved that it didn’t leak oil and it’s PO was a pro euro car tech. It looked better than most cars up here, seen no recent winters, and it’s body was clean... everything looked norm for a 34 year old car. It needed electrical fixing and cosmetic stuff, but the heavy hitting was done, new suspension and reg eng mtc done.

With covid keeping us home, I got some ramps and really started looking at things. I take a ton of pics, and then look closely at iPad, zoom in and explore. It’s how I found the crack on my oil line.

You guys helped me along with my ( Indy ) saying best to get new lines even though NO Leaks.

So after spending $300 at Elephant, in these times, it was a big splurge. It I vowed to drive the car I bought.

So I’m looking at this pic I took if the Crossover line nut, where it goes to the engine.

I see a crack on the nut! Again, it’s dry. NO OIL. It’s 12am I’m on the couch and I was saying pls NO NO..HOW?

It’s my understanding that to get to that nut you have to take the heat exchangers off..and at the start of the season I’m not ready for that..with no lift. All because of this pic. More below..

Wake up, get under the car, and get in there with a micro Dremel and a scotch brite pad...

As it turns out it’s the lighting. The nut look like it was torqued and slipped, causing a little angle. Imagine my relief.

Since last post I marked the line I’m fixing because I’m paranoid. On grocery runs I’m on the oil pressure gauge. 4-5 steady. 3 idling. NO leaks. I just hope I don’t cause some with the new lines.

Lastly, I assume my cross over like is original. What’s the AAF marking on it?

Who knows? All the patina on it matches, I wanna clean it up? Must be original? I tried searching it..

Maybe just a tad bit paranoid? If it ain’t broke , don’t fix it! If you get under an old car, you are always going to find something. Dried seals and so on. Just wash and wax your car!!! A lot cheaper!!!!!

Yup, magnification will do that to you. I work on large engines and this happens all the time when inspecting with a borescope. We've taken engines completely apart for what appears to be scraps of metal or a crack, then found nothing to be concerned about.

Thx. Paint could use a good polish, she has patina all over the front, but I love it. Knew it when I saw her..

My 85 is not restored but looks nice. Has the usual stuff for being 35 years old. Would not have it any other way !!!

Nice car!!! I posted about the colour correction on my Guards Red Coupe, the results were nothing short of amazing. IF your car has original single stage paint it could be very oxidized:

Mines Indershot Red. I’ve only used a little touch up paint from Porsche that the PO had, and it matches.

All paint is orig except the drivers fender. Only reason I know is a meter and if you really look close you can see these spots that look like watermarks. Also, there’s a hint of overspray on the trim, so it wasn’t removed. No signs of damage or bondo..

I always thought inder/Gaurds were the same ( I have the N.A. hard copy brochure and it’s Gaurds ) but a source I trust, with 30 years at the top level in the PCar concours and racing says there is in fact a difference..

Here’s the spots I was talking about. It’s really hard to see normally.

Again, she’s a driver and I will prob do a colour correction but I like the patina and feel having perfect paint will freak me out in a parking lot.

What I love is we look at them like ..meh... but people think it’s perfect. Lol.

The lines are glare but see the white foggy spots? I was told buy a dent specialist that it’s caused by a polish they used in the 80s. He actually pinned down what shops used it.

Last one is up in my left quarter panel. That’s the tail light. But you can see the red and the white prime coat as paints thin up here. Black stuff is some anti rust crap I’m picking off in parts.

Looks like that car has never seen salt. Luckily that's pretty common for these cars in Canada - in fact many cars up here are in great condition because most people bought them as 3rd or 4th cars.

Not too many air cooled 911's up this way..... I think my little collection might be half of them.

well I'm going to do my oil lines as i have that crack on the one. its been there for years i bet. The lines are hard and could use a redoing.


I was reading that it may be easier to take the whole oil system down ( front lines and cooler ) and then work on the thermostat fittings than on the car.

I don't think it's a crack. Looks like a remnant of someone trying to loosen it with a chisel or get a pipe wrench on it, etc.

My opinion is, If there's no leak, there's no problem. Drive it and enjoy it. PS - the lines are pretty heavy duty and are pretty stiff when new.

Just spent $251 US on new lines. They show up this week. Elephant Racing. I think I’m gonna monitor it as I check it every dive. Zero leaks. I’m not in a super rush, but before I do a long drive, I’ll change them. Once I acquire the tools and such. I was wondering about that crack.

I wonder if that black anti rust crap someone sprayed years ago actually coated the thermostat causing an easy disconnect. Lol.
