Transmission woes
I drained the tranny, planning on changing to Swepco, and foung some metal on the drain plug. It is fine bits of steel, sort of like filings
I have been noticing a high-pitched "zzing" sort of sound when shifting into third, and it happens whether shifting slow or fast. Also, once into gear the sound goes away, but if I apply additional pressure to the shift lever, I can get the same sound. It isn't a gear grinding sound. The car (84 Carrera) has a set of close ratio gears that were installed (ECI Motorsports) about 10 years ago. The car gats a fair amount of track use. I am trying to decide on whether to: -change the oil and hope for the best (and maybe improve shifting technique, although I am pretty careful about not speed shifting) -take the tranny apart for diagnostics (any advice on this being a DIY project) The drainplug looks like this: ![]()

The amount of metal on the drain plug looks fairly normal.
I have an article on rebuilding the 901 and I'm expanding to the 915, the G50 and 2 styles of VW. James

Huh? That's nothing...just normal amount of metal flakes there...when you start finding pieces of gear teeths then you can start worrying.
