Do I need brake bands for my 915?

Like a lot of you, I'm missing 1st gear synchro and on my way to loosing 2nd. A 915 rebuild is in the cards. With all the talk of rising synchro prices, I'm looking around and find: "Synchro bands" for about $23! Woo-hoo! Synchros for cheap!!! So I order - they came today - OEM Porsche parts - they're not synchros - they're brake bands. P/N 928.302.318.02 and 928.302.319.08. What the hell do I do with these?

Looking a PP and many other sites, they don't even sell brake bands as a seperate item. Why is that? Do they come with the dog teeth? Should I keep these things or send them back?

Brake bands and synchros (as you found out) are different animals. The brake bands go inside the synchro and expand it until the slider and gear match speed. I don't have enough experience to know whether they (brake bands) should be replaced or not.

i replace all the brake bands when i rebuild a transmission. they're a very important part, as they energize the syncro ring. i want my trannys to shift as good as possible. the 1st band has an offset notch for one of the dogs. with the opening at the top, the long side goes to the left.

Chris,

Where did you find the synchros and the brake bands. While my tranny is out, I'm thinking about rebuilding it as well.

Thanks,

Thanks for the info, John. I'm definately going to replace anything wearable once I'm inside, esp if its only $20 to do so. Since its a DIY project, I'm willing to drop $1000+ on parts. I guess I'll keep the brake bands and get the synchros later.

BTW, my Bently manual has a real crappy expladed view of the gear shafts in the 915 - this is why I couldn't tell where exacly the brake bands went. Funny thing is, I found a real good exploded view drawing - in the Performance Products catalog! They're prices are a little high for me, but hey - nice drawing.
