Let's play - what's this tube?

Hi All, this is to the right in my engine bay on my -71 911T.

What is this tube for?

Thanks in advance,

That's my guess as well. Moved to the other side for '72.

Thanks for your replies. It has no exit at the bottom. Looks like it makes a turn towards the heat tube. I think it is the circle on the drawing. If so, what is connected to it originally? And since I'm going to use aftermarket K&N type air filters should I just block it off?

K&N allow more air...and more particulate matter (dust)...the two go hand in hand...every serious test shows that.
If you live in an area where you do not travel dirt roads or it is not dusty then fine.
I had one on my hotrod chevy some years back and so much dust got in the carb it jammed up the idle circuit. This was a factory oiled unit that was never re used...so....not over or under oiled.

yes same thing happened to me, on a v8 but when cleaning the filter, the carb was coated inside with fine powder like dust. the price you pay for high flow air. Racing, they're fine.

OK, so it's the filter, not the design of the air cleaner that is the problem?

And to my original question, do I block of this tube running this type of air cleaner?

Thanks! No dirt roads where I live. And certainly not for this car when the complete resto is done!
