Oil Cap: Plastic or Bayonet?

My 86 Carrera came to me with a worn out yellow plastic oil cap. I ordered a replacement from Pelican but it didn't fit right so I sent it back. I'm considering getting the more expensive metal Bayonet cap, but not sure if it will work.

Are these either/or or will the Bayonet fit all openings?
Any suggestions?

Thx

If you are calling the dipstick a bayonet. The cap and dipstick are two separate items.

A tight fitting cap is essential for proper running. A dipstick slides into a small tunnel/tube in side the filler tube. The cap covers the stick. The cap reduces the idle when properly fitted and turned until it stops.

The threaded yellow cap and metal bayonet cap are not interchangeable.

I went through this when i had to replace my oil tank... i think the last year of the bayonet style was '85.

The yellow cap is used on the 944 also. Never in 15+ years have i had to replace one. The o-ring should be replaced if its still original.

I stand corrected, I have only owned an 83....sounds like good advice to the OP.

Great advice. Thank you.
Pelican Parts lists both as the correct fit for my 86 so I was a bit confused especially after the threads on the yellow cap I got didn't seem to fit well so I returned it.

I'll look into the o-ring.

Cheers

86 must have been the change over year. My 86 which was built in October of 1985 has the metal bayonet style cap.

It’s on some 86s, I have the plated cap on my 86. a few things changed in 86. The Tech Service Bulletins will tell you but don’t think of the models as changing Jan.

I have an early 86 built in July 85. Compared to a late 86, the oil cap is one thing. Others shared with the 85 are,

The Shell stickers on the heat duct

The back seat securing feature tabs vs middle seat lock

Some others things I forget.

86 cars have a lot of new things that were on 87-88 cars.

At the moment I’m going through all the TSBs from 84-89. To date there the best things available for knowing the car. Why Porsche doesn’t mass release them is beyond me..

if the car is build in october 1986 it is considered already 1987 model;-) that goes for all the other years...

Oil cap.

Ours has a build date of Jan '86.

It has the yellow cap.

And yes, original owner.

Best,

Gerry
