Dave,
If you start the bottom screw, but just started, then push the top over as you demonstrate, the hole doesn't need to be lined up. It already is. Just tighten the screw while holding the top in place. Maybe that's what you did? If not, then try that sequence to see if it helps. Best of luck. |
I just recently installed 9eleven headlights and faced the same issue - starting with the bottom screw barely started then pushing the headlight rim just above the lip so it locks also did the trick for me.
OP, looking at your image above it looks like the top of the headlight rim is seated too far above the upper lip of the headlight bucket and that is why it will not align with the bottom tab. You should still be able to see the gasket with the rim locked into place. I can't speak for Rennline lights but I am very satisfied with the 9eleven lights. What I am unsatisfied with now is knowing that my very expensive headlights can come easily undone with enough force - since the entire assembly is fastened with one screw and the upper notch. I am planning to use some zip ties to retain the assembly inside the bucket, in case they pop out. I see this is also an issue for H4 headlights so I don't know that it is the fault of any one manufacturer, more the limitations of the design of the headlight buckets. Of course the sealed beam lights were fairly well secured. |
Wow... waiting for my headlights to come in as well from Rennline. They have been very unresponsive but I'm assuming it has something to do with Covid.. but who knows?
I'm hopeful I don't have these issues, I also ordered the primed ring. And to be safe I will assemble and ensure they fit well prior to sending them off to paint. I will continue to watch this thread for additional info/help with install. |
Here's the latest in the Rennline headlight installation - have to say that Rennline have done an outstanding job in getting this problem corrected. Received new headlight trim rings and did a test fit-up on the workbench. These rings fit the headlight housings perfectly. I will be taking these to the paint shop this week and hopefully have everything assembled and working by next week.
Rennline had a problem with one of their subcontractors making the trim rings - a batch came in slightly too small and unfortunately, I was one of the recipients of these. Will keep this thread going until lights are installed. |
Good to hear. I was going to update as I spoke with them specifically about your post/thread as I was waiting on my lights. They said they were working with you and told me what had happened. Mine arrived on Friday and I also test fit before taking to paint.... fit perfectly.
So, great to hear they've been good to you (and me) and hopefully we'll be two happy campers in the coming weeks after install. Cheers, Bryan |
Question.. Did you do the "angel eye" or "halo" as well? Wanting to see how others have wired this into the headlight bucket for cleanest install.
Thanks for any help! |

thanks
That is basically what I did. I used the tap to go into my ground wire but for the other wires I bypassed the factory plastic spade connector assembly and combined them into one connector then connected to the halo wiring. Worked well and if I ever remove the system they will still be one unit. I try and stay away from those "tap into" style connectors as I fear it limits signal to the rest of the items, but that could just be in my head... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/fles.gif

I was disappointed with a recent transaction with RL. Poor communication, poor customer service.

So a proper harness is unavailable? Those wire taps even though they work, look a bit cheapy, reminds me of some the stereo installs from back in the day.

Glad to hear that Rennline admits they have a supplier issue. I’m still happy that I returned mine. Received my Audette’s yesterday afternoon, installed this morning with no issues. There is no comparison in the quality of the Audette’s versus the Rennline. Audettes are superior in every way.

Has anyone replaced their H1s with LEDs? I use 50w lows and 100w highs and they are wonderful for my driving style (tame). While I love the look, I haven't read anything that convinces me they will be an improvement. However, like hp, torque and brakes more is better.

Any pics of your install? Good looking car.

Since I've had a fair bit of trouble installing my Audettes, I'd love to hear the techniques you used to get yours on.

Otter74,
I wish I had some easy solution to your issues. Besides a slight adjustment of the bucket lip I had no issues. By slight, I had to bend the bucket lip inward maybe .01” to .03” in a few spots to allow the trim ring to slip over properly. I had no issues with retention of the assembly at the top of the bucket which was a major issue for me with the Rennlines. I really think there’s an inconsistency in the bucket geometry over the years. That and the design in general is very poor, a single screw and a small lip to retain the assembly is ridiculous. For something as critical as headlights I don’t understand why they did not use additional fixed fasteners?! I also added a zip tie retainer in case anything should come loose, time will tell. |
After receiving the second set of Rennline rings and fitting these up to the headlight housings on the bench, I thought fitment was perfect. As I did this operation without the headlight lens and seal in place, fitment seemed fine. This was a mistake on my part.
After getting the second set of rings painted, I attempted assembly again with headlight assemblies installed in the car with lenses and gaskets in place, following the instructions explicitly. To my disbelief, the rings would still not install properly; fitment was improved from the previous rings, but they would still not fit properly over the black plastic of the headlight assemblies. With the time and money I’ve invested in this kit, I’m at my wits end and am requesting a return authorization from Pelican Parts, from whom I originally purchased the product. Rennline worked with me in a timely manner, shipping me an additional set of lenses and headlight rings, no charge. I must admit they made a valiant effort in attempting to please me. Unfortunately, components are not compatible and this kit seems to be a product prematurely released without fully being tested or developed. Very disappointed. |
Ouch... so they didn't fit in the end? I'm there now about to put on the painted ring.. FML
On another question, when you had the headlights on and then turned the blinkers on did they blink faster (almost like a bulb was burnt out) but normal speed when headlights were off? |
success
Was able to get them in albeit with some fine tuning. The gasket reveal all the way around changes slightly but overall it looks nice and had to modify the screw hold in the Rennline housing on one of the lights and also alter the gasket around the glass assembly to allow fitment and also control look.
Not an ideal fit and took 4 hands and roughly 10-15 minutes per light to fit each ring but job done.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1591916338.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1591916338.jpg |

Bryan (x98boardwell),
Thanks for your help and suggestions and happy to know that you got your kit installed. I should have enlisted the help of another person as I had no success in trying to do this install by myself. But in my opinion, this job should not require 2 people. I can remove and replace the stock headlight assembly in under 20 minutes per side, by myself, with no difficulties. I'm done with an LED headlight retrofit! After all the time and frustration spent, I'm now happy with my stock headlights...they really look good to me. And from a practical standpoint, my car is rarely driven at night so I can live with my OEM lights. |
