Carrera DME - where & how much?

My mech has determined that the control unit of my '84 Carrera is the culprit in causing bucking, hesitation, backfiring, etc. When he subs another unit, the issues go away.

So, where can I get a solid used DME for an '84-'86 Carrera, and how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks,

Hugh,

You may want to consider this service. They offer Repair & Return or Off-the-shelf sales. 48 hour turn around and Three year warranty. The BMW crowd has had good experience with them.

I can't speak of the N/A 944 but the 944 Turbo DME one is similar to the 911 one. They have a different resistor in the fuel injector circuit and different software. In the case of the 24 pin Eproms units, some of the software is on-board the processor (i.e. not in the Eprom) .

There's a certain company in Miami, Florida whose name rhymes with Shirt-Ex who advertised rebuilt DME units for $349 in last month's Pano. There is a core charge, but that's the cheapest I could come up with when I thought my DME was bad.

If you can get a rebuilt for $350 do it.

I paid $500 in December for a used one, included diagnostic and labor, all 10 minutes of it, labor that is.

Looked around and was finding prices north of $500 so I was happy with the $500.

Personally, I'd feel most comfortable having my own unit repaired. Especially if I had an '84 which seems to be a "transition" year.

Have your unit gone over by an electrical type of guy who knows circuit boards. All it might need is a re-solder / reheat of soldered connections. these things are usually v. reliable.

When you replace the DME It may be a wise idea to replace your sparkplug wires as faulty wires can send the voltage thur the FI injector harrness to the DME.This may have been why yours failed. Steve

I'll echo Steve's reply. I was 'strongly' advised by the rebuilder that the wires were the fault that burnt my unit. Put new wires on before firing it up and I can say no problems since.
