Gear Shift mechanism ‘85 911
Can some tell me what this is on the top of the gear shifter.. it doesn’t seem to be connected to anything and swings freely. I don’t have any issue with my shifting... confused.
Thanks

Reverse lockout pawl. Prevents a direct shift into Rev. from 5th (go ahead, make my day). Confirm with ENG OFF, car stopped.
Normal use: Shift to neutral. With car at 0 mph, shift into Rev. |

it just swings around freely.. maybe there is a bad or missing spring? I never had a problem shifting so should I just let it be? if not is there a spring i should buy?
Thanks a lot |

Swings around freely? The factory shift lever is made up of two parts epoxied together during assembly - the lower part contains the pivot and ball end. Sounds like that joint connection failed.
The “glue” sometimes gives up after some time. Remove/lift the shift boot and take a look. Sherwood |

There should be a spring there. When you shift to 5th, the pawl has to pop back. You can check more closely to see if the spring (a sort of circular, flat spring with its ends bent) has just gotten out of position and can be reattached. No evidence of it in the picture.
You can't buy the spring from Porsche - not a separate part, and the pawl is riveted in place. Not sure you can even purchase the whole plate. I'd correspond with Porsche dismantlers to see if they would sell you just that top plate. Or use the parts wanted section here on Pelican. Plenty of guys have installed a Rennshift of WEVO shift tower and system, and have the whole stock shifter sitting around in their garage. |

I would think that with the spring missing, you would sometimws hit reverse (grinding) when coming out of fifth. Never a problem with that?

Not sure how that clock spring could be missing. Most likely a broken spring leg. The reverse lock out pawl assembly is installed with a rivet, and spring replacement means R&R of that rivet.
Update: The rivet can be replaced with a nut and bolt or equivalent. I've got a spring if you need one. Sherwood Last edited by 911pcars; 05-24-2020 at 02:48 PM.. |
