Aftermarket alarm removal horn snafu
Hi all,
I removed two old alarm systems from my 1981 car one was the old keypad Clifford near the ignition and the other one was an older alpine with a key remote. It was spaghetti grouping of wires everywhere. I methodically removed everything cleaned it all up. Went for a nice 1/2 hour drive. everything was going perfect but then the horn started intermittently going off the last 5 minutes of the drive. Last mile the horn was on non stop. Even when I turned the car off it still was on. I had to disconnect the negative battery cable in order to make it stop. There was one aftermarket wire that was not grounded, which I grounded afterwards. Took it next day for a 10 minute drive and no horn, so far. Not sure if I drove it long enough. I have attached a few pics to give y’all visuals in case any of you have come across this. Not sure if the pictures will help. Any advice or Experiences with this is appreciated. Thanks, Gary ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Horn circuit...
Brown/white from horn pad runs through dash harness to a single male/female black rubber insulated connector under the fuse panel. Then it runs directly to the horn relay in the front lighting harness. Any other wires spliced into that circuit that could go to ground will cause the problem you described.

You can always pull the horn relay if it keeps going off- on the front fuse panel.

Relays relays
Hi all,
Based on Dennis’ recommendation I traced the horn wire to the male/ female rubber connection. The mystery begins there. I pulled out the aftermarket horns for the alpine alarms. I think I am dealing with the Clifford now. I took some pictures. I know it’s hard to track with pictures but hopefully good enough. An orange skinny wire was tied into the alpine alarm and was cut right at the relay. Picture attached. There is still a thick red and red/white wire attached to it along with a ground. The second set of relays is a dual set up with a couple of wires being cut on that one as well. Can anyone tell what the relays are for? Want to make sure I don’t start yanking things that may help with the headlights etc. Thanks for the input. Gary ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Once you cut any one wire to a 4 pin relay, you are basically rendering it useless.....they aren’t doing anything anymore except proving a place for those wires to sit. The relay with just the black wire to ground can completely go away....the one with the two red you should check if the wires are hot (+12v) I’m guessing they aren’t
