Engine noise - intermittant clang
Hi Guys
I have a metal clanging noise which only happens after engine warms up (5mins) seems random/intermittant, one comes then nothing for few seconds, then another, seems to happen more often as engine gets hotter. Then i switch off in case of damage. also seems to be slight puff of smoke just after happens. could this be valve to piston? Or maybe sticking valve? i have had engine out for respray but also fixed an oil leak and whilst had cam chain covers off I did a minor adjustment on valve timing. This seems to be happening evry time i have her running now. I have a video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIfI4BX_OFU&feature=youtu.be Any advice appreciated! ta Jon |
The sticking valve is a good guess but doesn't sound quite right, at least on the video. I sounds higher up on the engine.
I would also check the Pulleys, fan belt, fan, and fan housing and alternator. The fan housing could have a crack. A compression check would be a good idea. Possibly isolate a bad cylinder. Best of luck, Rahl |
Any scuff marks at the bottom of the fan housing from the fan rubbing? Housings crack and belt tension pulls the alternator/fan down.

it would be nice if you make a video from behind seeing the complete back..
from what i hear it could be inside your banana- muffler... Ivan |
