Weird Project - Cigarette Lighter Garage Door Opener

			So...first world problem...

Not happy with my garage door opener situation. Was thinking of figuring out a way to trigger the opener via my non-functional cigarette lighter. Push...and voila...opening magic. Any thoughts? I want this to be something reversible and clearly...safe. Thanks, John

How about using a Flash to Pass garage door opener? Just flash the lights to open the garage door.

I have my garage door opener velcroed up under the dash, out of sight.

Great idea! If you don't mind cannibalizing an opener it shouldn't even be all that difficult to do.

Shouldn't be difficult with a momentary push button, just rewire the original one to a switch in which you can thread the lighter knob

I've done this with a couple of prior cars, including my previous '84. In that one I installed a momentary switch in the console in place of the fader dial.

Haven't selected a likely spot and switch location in my '72 yet.

johntucker -- think the hardest part of this operation is going to be coming up with a way for the cigarette lighter to serve as a switch -- you might want to consider using an intensive wiper switch for this -- https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/pel_search_2016.cgi?command=DWsearch&make=POR&LastVisited_input=911M&description=91161331901 (or headlight washer switch -- https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/91161331901.htm?pn=911-613-319-01-OEM&utm_source=googleppc&utm_term=91161331901&utm_campaign=Shopping+Feed&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuv7WzbrK6QIVksDACh2JPAQ6EAQYAiAB EgLAafD_BwE)

these each have the right mechanism, pushing it causes the circuit to complete and releasing it causes the circuit to open -- and they can each be installed into cutouts that have already been made in your dashboard (you'd simply need to cut the vinyl covering to access the cutout). Thx for reminding me of this

Your dash has a cut-out (covered by the vinyl) in the dash for the headlight washer function - assuming you don't have that on your car. It is a momentary NO switch, just what you need to wire into a cannibalized door opener you mount behind your dash, reachable by removing the instruments, some or all. That would allow relatively easy access to the opener for battery replacement, assuming you didn't fabricate the circuit needed to provide 1.5V or whatever the opener uses from your 12V system and skip the battery.
