Getting back in the game - Opinions needed
Hello All,
My wife and I are possibly getting back into the Porsche game after some life changes (long crazy story) got us out of the game for a few years. I need your Honest opinions on two cars that have been offered to us, both have been built and owned by the same highly experienced Porsche owner. Opinions on things like long term value, maintenance, repair costs, visual likeness etc... Both are fully built Street / DE style cars. Both cars are offered to us at the same price so that doesn’t affect our decision. We are 15 year enthusiast and past DE die hards. I instructed with PCA for 10+ years And my wife can drive like nobody’s business... ![]() First car: 964 Carrera 2 in White - Owner says its an excellent street car, very nice ride quality. 993 Varioram engine rebuilt and tuned, upgraded 6speed trans and differential, PSS 10s, 993 Big red front brakes - 993 C2 rears. Speedline wheels, Recaro SPG seats, MOMO wheel, all new interior carpet, door panels. Second car: 2002 996 Twin Turbo in Silver - Owner says its a compliant street car, more edgy and stiff than the C2. Full GMG built Engine with multiple correct upgrades, made 630hp at the tires at 5200 ft elevation. Front diff removed and converted to GT2 specs, Carbon GT2 boys upgrades including rear wing, PSS 10s, Upgraded front calipers, Kenisis wheels, factory GT2 seats. Let me know your thoughts and I really appreciate your time in doing so.

I owned a an 03 996tt for a total of 10 months after growing tired of the nannies. coming from an air cooled spec 911 it was unbearable. it was fast and took very little skill to drive with all the safety features. if you are going to track one you need to make sure the coolant lines have been pinned or welded. as I understand it from when I had my car many track groups were requiring that it be done to participate in a TT or the GT3 variants.

I honestly don't think we'll do more than one track day in a couple years. Did it so much, loved it but not something we're into any longer.

Man that 964/993 engine coupe sounds awesome. It's a different car than the 03 Turbo. I have owned 2 996 Turbo S coupes and a 997 Turbo S cab. Those are worlds away from my current love 88 coupe.
To me the two you are considering are apples and oranges....drive them both. They are both modified, highly. Value would not be something I would consider. The air cooled car, to me, is always going to worth more than a 996 modified turbo.

Nothing to add except having to pick between what sounds to be 2 very nice cars is a great problem to have. Good luck with whichever one you chose

I haven't driven either, but would be more partial toward a 964. Turbos always seem to be a hassle to me...

996 headlights are a deal breaker for me. Others may not be as bothered by them and have the mindset that you can't see them when you're driving. I like to look at my cars when I'm not driving them.
The build quality of the 996 is also not to the same standard of the 964 and 993 era cars. For me, the 964 with the 993 engine would be an easy choice with zero hesitation. |

Not really a bad choice either way. Comes down to your intended usage and personal tastes.
If it were me I would go for the 964 but long-term it seems Turbos eventually slingshot past standard 911's in terms of value so that may be something to consider.

On looks alone, neither are up there in that department. Though I'm sure with some really good bumper kits, the 964 can be made to look better. I much prefer the round headlamps.
Now, I do like the thought of a 630hp turbo... Yeah, try driving them both, and see which one you can live with. |
