Dirt collecting in engine compartment

I spent a fair amount of time cleaning up my engine compartment and am constantly amazed at the amount of dirt (sand?) that accumulates in all the crevices. I have put on several thousand miles of back country roads over the past few months, but the amount of dirt looks like I've been rallying dirt roads (I have not).

How is the dirt getting in?

The engine seal is good, I do not have a sound pad and the foam blocks in front of the shock tower are gone. Is the dirt coming in from in-front of the shock tower? The foam blocks don't look like they would do a very good job of blocking dirt...

If it is from in-front of the shock tower, is there a better solution to seal that area?

The giant fan right in front sucks in air and all the dirt that is in the air in massive volumes.

It is just going to happen if you drive it. Just like washing the rest of the car, it is just part of the result of driving a car. Nothing will stop it. Pretty engine compartment.

And if you think about it, the tires are kicking up a cloud of dust, that the fan sucks in. That fan pumps a lot of air.

Ideally the fan is pulling air in from the top of the car; if pulling from below you recycle hot air in addition to dirt. Best to seal off the bottom from the top as best you can. In addition to keeping the engine bay clean it helps keep your cylinder and head fins clean.

My advice is to have a few whiskies before looking at the tops of your tail lights inside the fenders...

Where are all of fuses and the rest of the junk that should be on the left hand side, next to the fuel filter??

^^^Interesting. Probably a good idea to strap down that coil wire to the dizzy.

I don't think all the dirt is getting sucked in from above. I'll have to experiment with closing off the gap in front of the shock tower.

Better yet, check out the bracket on the inner front fender by the washer res. Hand fulls of muck stuck in there waiting to rot out your inner fender.

I deleted all that mess. Not running an assist fan or rear defroster so most of it was useless. I did save the jumper port to set idle.

Any examples of how it should be tied down? I thought the 3.2s just had it hanging like mine.

I agree it doesn't look right...

someone said: "dirt don't slow you down."

it's an engine compartment at the rear of a car, the area where dirt gets whirled up.

I went through this area recently and was shocked at how much crap was jammed up there. Had to be more than a pound or two total...

Not concourse correct, but I used high temperature PU foam to replace the blocks that crumbled out of my Targa. That sealed well.

Solamar, what do you use to keep that fan blade polished.

That is why Porsche made lots of 911s. You can have yours the way you like it, and I can have mine my way.

Mine engine compartment is clean enough for a road car. It has been to California three times. And to Maine, and Canada and 40 total states.

It is nice enough that the dealer invited me to display my car at the introduction party of the new 2020 911.

I do indeed appreciate Concours cars, I just never will have one, I drive mine way to much.

"How's the dirt getting in?"

You know that big grill on the top of your engine lid???????? It's a bit of a secret but, it lets air into the engine compartment to cool the engine.
