Crazy expensive parts that are only available via mail order. ;/

I've found most all parts are very affordable/reasonable.
Where are you buying yours? (mail order)

What I like the most about my 911 is the no electronics simplicity of a purely mechanical machine that gets the job done while engaging the driver.
I also love the DYI aspect if it, the aesthetics and the performance which is more than adequate for street driving, even by today’s standards.

Funny - when I originally read the title of this thread, my first reaction was "the smell" and yet I figured no way will I write that, people will think I'm nuts. Now I read the posts and its probably the most common response!

Just love the shape.

1977 911 with a 3.0 Lt

For me, it's analog!
Once I get out of second gear into third and fourth, it's all about just feeling the power bands.
Long chunky throws with the 915 gearbox, staying with traffic or just putting down the power and letting her rip past and leaving it all behind has given me such great satisfaction every time I drive my black on black 1977 911 targa with a 3.0 Lt engine in a narrow bodied Porsche.

It's the scrub radius.
The 964 runs a ton of offset to make negative SR whereas the earlier 911s have lower offset wheels and significantly more SR.

How much does the change to power steering with the 964 have to do with the change in steering feel?

Can you imagine a scented card that smelled like an old air cooled 911? :)

It's smells like nasty gear oil or CV grease with a little leather from the interior.
On a hot day mix in some humidity from the AC trying to keep up.
While you're driving it you are trying to smell just the leather dash.

At speed the scent of brake dust enters the cabin.
I had a helmet blower in my track 911 so I could breathe fresh air. ;)

1984 Carrera, had a trifecta.
Was getting gas and a 14 year old kid came up and asked a few questions and said, nice car.
As he left a middle aged guy came over and said his dad always has a 911 and he wished he had one too.
Was finishing up, wiping the windows after washing, a late 60s guy drove up in an Audi and said he had a ‘72 at home he bought new, and “aren’t they great cars”
The only thing remotely close is my 1968, M-109 military truck:

As you can see in my sig line, I have an '87 and a '90. The '90 is new to me, whereas the '87 I've had for 15 years. Maybe I don't have a well set-up '90, but the 964 feels much more floaty than the 930. The 930 has that hunkered down feel to it. But the 964 steering is much more vague in comparison. It never does anything wrong, but it never feels as glued to the tarmac as does the 930. Like I said, the 964 is new to me and I haven't delved into its supposedly stock suspension. But if I had the opportunity to swap in the non-power assisted rack from the RS America (it's NLA), I would be tempted to do so.

Either way, handling is probably my favorite characteristic of a 911. Both my cars love corners.

Thro a Quaife quick ratio rack in the ‘87, one of my favorite mods.

Having taken PS out of a few cars, I'd say very little once you're moving above parking lot speed.
There's definitely differing amounts of effort required to turn the wheel PS vs non-PS. But the 'feel' is related more so to the geometry...particularly caster and scrub radius.

"The scrub radius is the “lever arm” of longitudinal forces applied at the contact patch (when braking). On the front suspension, a positive scrub radius gives stability because it causes toe out when braking and toe in when accelerating."

911 w/ 7ET23.3 front wheels has a s/r of 52.4

s/r of a 964 w/ 7s is 0

s/r of a 993 w/ 7s is -10
the bigger s/t in either direction the more feedback to the steering wheel

ABS equipped cars have to have s/r 0 to some neg. value

Curious - is steering feel (and effort) perceptibly different with 16x7 fronts vs. 16x6?

Shaun @ Tru6 06-16-2020 03:35 AM

The community around it. I love that I have friends all over the country centered around our cars.

That it's essentially a Lego set that you can keep building over and over with different configurations.

All over the country? You undersell yourself.

VWLoosenuts 06-16-2020 09:04 AM

The wheels and stance so far. im sure this will change throughout the build

w/ a 6ET36 the s/r goes down to 39.7 so you will get ~24% less feedback through the steering wheel
