Where are you buying yours? (mail order) |
What I like the most about my 911 is the no electronics simplicity of a purely mechanical machine that gets the job done while engaging the driver.
I also love the DYI aspect if it, the aesthetics and the performance which is more than adequate for street driving, even by today’s standards. |
Funny - when I originally read the title of this thread, my first reaction was "the smell" and yet I figured no way will I write that, people will think I'm nuts. Now I read the posts and its probably the most common response!

1977 911 with a 3.0 Lt
For me, it's analog!
Once I get out of second gear into third and fourth, it's all about just feeling the power bands. Long chunky throws with the 915 gearbox, staying with traffic or just putting down the power and letting her rip past and leaving it all behind has given me such great satisfaction every time I drive my black on black 1977 911 targa with a 3.0 Lt engine in a narrow bodied Porsche. |

Can you imagine a scented card that smelled like an old air cooled 911? :)
It's smells like nasty gear oil or CV grease with a little leather from the interior. On a hot day mix in some humidity from the AC trying to keep up. While you're driving it you are trying to smell just the leather dash. At speed the scent of brake dust enters the cabin. I had a helmet blower in my track 911 so I could breathe fresh air. ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1592060171.jpg |
1984 Carrera, had a trifecta.
Was getting gas and a 14 year old kid came up and asked a few questions and said, nice car. As he left a middle aged guy came over and said his dad always has a 911 and he wished he had one too. Was finishing up, wiping the windows after washing, a late 60s guy drove up in an Audi and said he had a ‘72 at home he bought new, and “aren’t they great cars” The only thing remotely close is my 1968, M-109 military truck: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1592199609.jpg |

Either way, handling is probably my favorite characteristic of a 911. Both my cars love corners. |

There's definitely differing amounts of effort required to turn the wheel PS vs non-PS. But the 'feel' is related more so to the geometry...particularly caster and scrub radius. |
another thread on scrub radius, featuring Bill and the Olsenized Black Beauty II

"The scrub radius is the “lever arm” of longitudinal forces applied at the contact patch (when braking). On the front suspension, a positive scrub radius gives stability because it causes toe out when braking and toe in when accelerating."

The community around it. I love that I have friends all over the country centered around our cars.
That it's essentially a Lego set that you can keep building over and over with different configurations. |
All over the country? You undersell yourself.

The wheels and stance so far. im sure this will change throughout the build
