SC Camshafts in 2.7 911S
I have a 1977 2.7 911S which could benefit from some extra ponies. Long term plan is high comp pistons and 964-ish cams, but I will wait with that until the engine needs a major overhaul. Internet wisdom does however suggest that gains are to be had with the SC cams, even with original compression. The plan was therefore to ship my cams to John Dogherty (Dougherty Racing Cams) who recommends this upgrade. Problem is that I live on the other side of the world and I have now an offer on a set of original SC cams locally.
1. Will they fit my 2.7 without much modification (I fear not)? 2. If not - is the needed modification easier than sending my cores over the Atlantic? 3. Some people are sceptical toward reground cams - should I be? 4. Does it even make sense to upgrade a 911S with original comp (it already has SSI and thermal reactors removed)? |

They will fit. I went threw the same dilemma with my 2.7. Ended up having my 2.7 cams reground to 964 specs. Ran good with carbs. Make sure what cam towers you have 3 or 4 journal.

Original SC cans will be 4 bearing. Your 2.7 will be 3 bearing.

The main issue is the diameter of the cam bearings. SCs had larger diameter cam bearings than on the older motors.

Thank you for your answers! That is what i thought. If diameter as well as the number of cam bearings is different, I am afraid that it will involve too much machining to make this work. Leaving question 3 and 4: Are reground camshafts durable and do the SC profile give any extra performance on a CIS car?

SC cams are inexpensive compared to sending yours out to get welded and ground
You need 4 bearing cam carriers to use stock SC/Carrera cams You can’t turn down the SC bearings to fit in the 2,7 carriers. The bearing will fit but lobes won’t clear. Bruce |

IMO, I'd wait until you're ready to rebuild your engine to swap cams. The SC cams wont't fit anyway (49mm bore size vs 47mm of your 2.7). And don't for forget to include the cost of regrinding the rockers into the equation.

Does anyone have before/after dyno comparisons for modding to SC/Carrera cams?
