Opinion/question, why would you want 2 gallons of hot oil on the cabin of your car? If you want the look just graft in the door and put jelly beans behind it. The reason that Porsche used it for such a short time was, it was plainly a poorly thought out idea.

It’s not in the cabin .
It’s in same position on 72 as 964 , just 72 had outside flap . Porsche used it after 72 too ... |

964/993 already have the tank forward of the wheel and access is in the engine compartment, seems like a lot of monkey motion to add a door and external access

Yepp, its is going on a 993, which have the tank in there, but will like to add the oil lid on the outsid, just for convenience and of course bling factor! Also the reason Porsche put the tank ahead of the rear axle was to better moment polar of inertia, (better handling and less oversteer).

Kent has a very nice car .
I love the colour , and the wheels , the stance , and the overall look . But is it unique ? Yes , but not because of it’s filler flap . Just like all my cars are unique , and non of them have that filler flap ![]() But let’s be clear . As I alluded to earlier the 72 “one year only” external oil flap was used by porsche after 72 , very limited cars that most outside the porsche community will never have heard of , and very few Inside the porsche community will ever get to see or own . But used by porsche non the less . ( And ruf did it to get the intercooler in there , nothing really to do with balance ![]() Last edited by ian c2; 06-02-2020 at 07:47 PM.. |

The '72 oil tank location wasn't a bad idea at all. The placement of the filler port could have been better.
As mentioned, if it was a bad idea, Porsche wouldn't have gone back to it with the 964/993.

The tank position is better for balance , moving weight inside the wheelbase .
That is why porsche did it . Ruf did it to get the intercooler into the engine bay . |

72 oil tank
I made the mod on my track car for weight distribution reasons, and just as much for the look. One mans whim, another ones sacrilege.

I think you'd need to start w/ a '72 quarter panel section, at least that was what I did when I put SC quarters on my '72. They cut out the original '72 filler door section and grafted it into the new SC quarter

This thread reminds me that I sometimes wish my car was a '72, not a '73

Really amazing cars. Probably not that hard to modify a 964 or 993 tank with an inlet. I think the dipstick was also in the side door.
Tried to buy a local one that was NOS but the old guy and I didn't quite hit it off. Imagine that. |
